My son has just asked me to knit an afghan for his GF, and he sent me a link to a pic of what she wants. Can anyone identify what stitches are used to make it look like this?

Thanks in advance!

It looks something like a Brioche st or the Honeycomb variation. See www.briochestitch.com

it could be a type of fisherman's rib. (the half version, maybe?)

here is a pic of the half-version of fisherman's:
http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=http://www.strickmasche.de/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/halppatent.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.strickmasche.de/halbpatent-stricken/&usg=__-EbYnsB5F1CRUjUOiwIbofVdnDg=&h=300&w=300&sz=35&hl=de&start=1&zoom=1&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=MOdMJEJITglxgM:&tbnh=116&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhalbpatent%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dde%26sa%3D N%26tbs%3Disch:1

it may just be a matter of yarn and needle ratio to make it look so bulky.

I just knit a hat in a really chunky yarn that came out looking alike to what you want... I may be able to take a picture tonight. I made mine by fisherman's with working all purls and knitting all knits in the row below. really easy, quick, elastic fabric and almost that look.

the other option is what I am just making in a baby blanket. Looks similar, too and comes close to the pic I found above:

I mean square 2 and pattern M2 in that blanket there - that would give you the explanation. It turns out a wonderful deep rib, very puffy, elastic, VERY nice for a blanket, since it will be very warm.

It sorta kinda also looks like My So-Called Scarf pattern, just with more cast on stitches.

*k2 p2* k last st and just repeat this row the same rs as ws
it may also be another of wenlan fav's the purse/turkish stitch which on her chunky would look like that
* p1 yo p2tog* just a single row repeat the same rs as ws (again)

I thought of Hering Bone (that's what that scarf is) for a moment, but it is more ribbed, less "zig-zaggy", you know?
