Hi Guys
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of an alternative (and cheaper) yarn to Rowan wool cotton please? I have a lovely pattern for flippin' mittens which uses small amounts of 6 different shades which at 5-6 per 50g ball works out a little bit expensive for me. This is only my 2nd 'real' project so I really have no idea about substituting yarns from those stated in the pattern. Any suggestions of another yarn would be really appreciated. Hope someone can help!

Sounds like you're in the UK, so ideas for US yarns won't help much. Not familiar with what you've got available, but something that's a wool acrylic blend may work, or even just an acrylic that's a dk weight.

I don't know if this advice is helpful or not, but I will offer it anyway. I have used Elann.com for substituting Rowan yarns. They often have a good cheaper alternative. I used them for an alternative to Rowan's Denim cotton yarns and found a good one for half the price per ball in the same color range. They have a section of their site that lists all of their yarns including the type of yarn and gauge/tension so that you can find a good substitute. I think they are located on the U.S./Canada border, so I am not sure how the shipping cost will work for where you live. The shipping cost might cancel out any benefit you get in the discounted yarn. But maybe it will work for you. Check it out.

Good luck,
V.
