I improvised the pattern for this chunky cabled earflap hat using Bernat Roving yarn. The color is called "bark" ... it's a warm brown color that I think will match well with lots of things this winter. I originally began the project with my husband in mind ... although now that it's finished I'm not sure whether he'll think it's too "girly".
Considering this is the first time that I've done a project without using a pattern, I'm pretty happy with the overall result. If I end up making another one in the future I might move the earflaps back a couple of stitches. I noted my "pattern" on my ravelry page (http://www.ravelry.com/projects/kmaclean/cabled-earflap-hat) for next time (or for others' inspiration).
