You could be either casting on or knitting incorrectly. Did you watch the videos here? There is also one called "demo of a small project" in the tips section that shows you casting on, knitting and binding off.

If you've watched the videos here already and it hasn't helped here's another site that has good videos AND written instruction with photos that might help, too.

I also recommend you NOT do the loop/backward loop cast on. Learn either long tail, knitted or cable cast on.

You might check to see if you're putting the R needle into the first st of your cast on, instead of between stitches.

Backwards loop method is so much easier than that crazy way they try to show ya! Look it up and you will be ready to knit

The backwards loop CO is easy to do, but it can be hard to knit into without getting long loops of yarn between the sts. So it's really not the best for starting a project if you need more than a few stitches.

I agree, videos here on KH are great. There's also a Long Tail Cast On for Beginners with Vickie Howell here:

What kind of a cast on are you using? When I use a thumb cast on, I have to watch the problem you mention. But if I start with a slip knot and do a knitted cast on, I don't have this problem.
