Following my post of the sidewise gloves from an out-of-print beginners' manual, per request of Kissersue, Here is the cable mitten pattern; I believe this to be an accurate transcription. If desired, ask and I will scan the pattern and send to your e-mail. audrey v

From Columbia-Minerva teach yourself to Knit the easy way, book 770
published 1968
Pattern Number 770-9
Materials: 4 ounces 4-ply worsted
Needles: One pair size 8 and blunt tapestry needle
Gauge: 9 stitches to 2 inches
9 rows to 1 inch

Left Mitten: Starting at cuff co 28 st. Work in k2p2 ribbing for 18 rows.
Change to garter stitch and cable pattern and increase 6 st
across next row as follows:
R.1 - right side: *K3, incr 1 st in next st, repeat from * 5 times more, k to end (34 st)
R.2: K5, p8, k to end
R.3: K15, place marker on needle, incr 1 st in each of next 2 sts, place marker on needle, k to end
R.4: Same as R.2, slipping markers
R.5: (Cable row) K to marker, incr 1 st in next stitch, k2, incr in next st, k4, slip next 4 st onto cable needle and hold in back of work, k4, then k the 4 st from cable needle, k to end
R.6: K5, p8, k to end
R.7: K to marker, incr 1 st in next st, k to within 1 st of next marker, incr 1 st in next st, slip marker, k to end
Repeat rows 6 & 7 twice more
R.12: Same as row 6
R.13: K to marker, incr 1 st in next st, k to within 1 st of next marker, incr 1 st in next st, k4, twist cable as on R.5, 14 sts between markers
R.14: K to cable section, p8, k to end
R.15: Knit
R.16: Same as row 14 - K to cable section, p8, k to end
R.17: Knit
R.18: K5, p8, k5, slip these st onto a stitch holder, k the 12 st of thumb, slip rmaining 16 sts onto a second holder. Working on the 12 sts of thumb only, continue in garter stitch for 14 rows.
Next row: k2 st tog across, break yarn, leaving about 12" for finishing. Draw yarn through remaining sts & fasten.
Attach yarn at beginning of second stitch holder & k to end
Join stitches for top ofhand on next row as follows:
K16, knit the 18 sts from first stitch holder - 34 sts
Continue to knit every row on the right side of work & purl 8 of cable section on wrong side of work, twisting cable every 8th row until mitten measures 3" or desired length from thumb.
Decrease for top of mitten as follows:
R.1: *K2, k2 tog, repeat from * across, k2
R.2: K26
R.3: *K2, k2 tog, repeat from * across, K2
R.4: K20
R.5: K2 tog across, break yarn, leaving about 14". Draw through remaining stitches and fasten. Sew seam at side of mitten on wrong side of work. Sew seam of thumb.
Right Mitten: co 28sts. Work k2p2 ribbing for 18 rows. Change to garter stitch and incr 6 sts across next row as on Left Mitten.
Start pattern on next row as follows:
R.2: K21, p8, k5
R.3: K17, place marker on needle, incr 1 st in each of next
2 sts, place marker on needle, knit to end
R.4: Same as row 2
R.5: K5, twist cable on next 8 st as on Left Mitten,
knit to marker, incr 1 st in next st, k2, incr 1 st in next
st, slip marker, knit to end
Continue to increase in st after first marker and in st before
second marker every other row until there 14 sts between markers
At the same time, twist cable in cable sectiion every 8th row.
Finish mitten to correspond to left mitten.
