Hi everyone! :waving:

Every year, for New Year's Eve, I host a party in our forum to bring in the New Year. This Friday evening, December 31st, our online party will last 4 hours (from 11:30 PM to 3:30 AM, Eastern US time).
http://bestsmileys.com/party/1.gif Happy New Year 2011!! http://bestsmileys.com/party/4.gif

The most exciting part of our celebration will be PRIZES (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1309034&postcount=6)!!
:cheering: :woohoo: :cheering:

Since I have been blessed with such an excellent collection of knitting books, I'll be offering some of them as prizes (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1309034&postcount=6). :)

To be eligible for the prizes, just send me a PM (private message), or post a reply to this discussion.
Prizes will be given at 12:00 and 12:30 for each time region (Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific). My hubby will draw names out of a hat to determine the winners. The prizes will be random, so it's the luck of the draw what you'll get! (Prizes will be listed here (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1309034&postcount=6) this week.)

Winners do not have to be online at the time of the drawing. I will notify you by private message in the forum if you are a winner.

In addition to our prizes, we will be knitting a 2011 KH Forum memento together. This year, I've designed a large drink sleeve for our project. This will keep our hands warm while we enjoy our favorite iced coffee drinks or milkshakes.
 :inlove:

If you want to join us in knitting the drink sleeve, just bring some size 7 knitting needles, and worsted weight yarn in 5 contrasting colors. Here is the pattern (http://shandehknitting.blogspot.com/2010/12/2011-happy-new-year-coffee-sleeve.html). The gauge for our project is 18 stitches over 4 inches (10 cm).

Last year, we had a wonderful time during our party, talking nonsense, knitting together, and sharing stories about our New Year celebrations all over the world.

I can't wait to see you all again this year!
:muah:

I do not celebrate New years Eve any more since that date has sad memories for me. My mother passed away on Dec 31 2003 so I do not feel very festive at that time. I was very close to her and so I miss her very much.

Well, my wife will more than likely want to spend time together, so I may be able to come online.

If not, I will try my hand at that cozy. However, I'm still a newbie and that chart looks quite scary since I don't know how to add a new color or a new skein/ball of yarn just yet.

So I'll get to it.

Hope I'll still be allowed to join the fun!

You'll get lots of help here if you need it. Just work on the cozy during the party, or start on it now, and post questions about the colorwork in the KH Forum's "How To (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=23)" section.

If you prefer to keep the project simpler, you can knit the entire cozy in one color, and add the words and images with duplicate stitch later.

Oh....and of COURSE you can still join the party!

I look forward to joining the party Friday night!:woohoo: Krista

Hi! :waving:

Just wanted to let you know I'm sorry for your loss. I know what that's like since I lost my Mom (many years ago) on Christmas Eve. I was 19 years old.

In following years my Dad never wanted to decorate or really celebrate the holidays because of our loss. But I remembered how much they both put into making Christmas special for us and how those Christmases were some of the happiest memories of my life.

So I just went along and decorated and cooked and cleaned and kept making Christmas as special as I could. Before too long, Dad joined in and it became a comfort for him rather than a depressing time. We both learned that if you celebrate and are grateful for the positive influence of the loved one who has gone ahead that it will validate their love for you and uplift your life.

I'd be willing to bet that the last thing your mother would ever want is for you to feel such continuing sorrow. I'll certainly pray for you that you find peace and the will to celebrate the gift of her presence in your life. Here's hoping that you'll ring in the new year with that wonderful joy and gratitude for that presence.

God bless...

Ruthie

If we were still at 29 with 9 prizes, then it would be 1 in 35.

This is such a cool idea! I will be around for the festivities but I'm not experienced in knitting with more than one color yet so I don't think I will be able to join in the project unfortunately. Sounds like a good safe way to celebrate.

You're welcome! Thanks for joining us!

If we were still at 29 with 9 prizes, then it would be 1 in 35. My math is quite rusty, so don't trust me 100%. LOL!
Thanks! Now, we have 50 participants. And it's growing by the hour!

Welcome to the KH Forum! You've found the right place to help you learn all you want to know about knitting. We have a lot of experienced knitters and crocheters among our members and moderators. And we love to help each other learn! Be sure to check out Amy's knitting videos on this website. They helped me learn a LOT!

YES!! Oh, I am SO glad this is happening!

Back when we still had a chatroom here, I spent a delightful New Year's Eve on it, recouperating from a terrible fight dh and I had.

We both recouped just fine.

Now he's down with a very bad cold and diabetic issues (blood sugar almost 500!) so I'm pretty much on my own again.

I'll see y'all here!

Hi all,

Its 22:36 here, fireworks are going off already. I think I'm the only one in the house still up!

No knitting to speak of, I've got an essay deadline on Weds so I'm trying to get some of that done. I've completely rewritten a couple of paragraphs I wasn't happy with so that it at least vaguely answers the question now. Problem is, because I was rewriting old stuff it hasn't made any dent in my word count! Good job I've set aside tomorrow and Sunday to finish the thing.

Do you think its ok to stop and knit now? I've done some work so shouldn't feel too guilty about knitting in the new year right?

People keep updating their word counts on facebook and its making me feel bad for not having finished it yet.

I'm making some black and blue dishcloths for my oldest son. (His choice for colors) He just moved into his first apartment, and I told him I would make some dishcloths for him. I started the first one last night, and it looks like a Carolina Panthers cloth. :teehee:

I started my New Year knitting last night...had to get my annual New Year Dishcloth done before I could work on my Party Knit.
The first year I joined KH was 2009 and Sandy hosted our party with a simple 2009 dishcloth pattern. Last year I changed it for 2010 and added a star. This year, I didn’t think about it soon enough for tonight…so, I only had time to change the year (kept the star).

I know that I wasn’t confident enough my first year for the color work, so…if you want a simple knit for tonight, your welcome to my pattern. It’s written as an Excel Spreadsheet (‘cause that’s the way I like it:teehee: ). It’s written straight-forward (I think)…just like you would read any spreadsheet. You’ll notice that every even row is a knit row.

Sorry for the poor picture quality…I didn’t get home early enough to take it outside with good light. Post if you have a question on how to read it.:knitting:

Now……I’m ready to get started on the great coffee/drink sleeve pattern Sandy gave us! Thanks again, Sandy…you’re still the best!

I'm making a mini dishcloth keepsake using Sandy's chart. I took the chart, added 4 stitches either side and am working a moss stitch border around it. Thought it would go nicely with some of the cloths I've done in previous years.

I'm not too confident with colourwork but I'm hoping practice will solve that so I'm plowing on regardless using scraps of mystery yarn I found.

Hey Everyone,

Happy (almost) New Year, at least for those of us on this side of the pond. I just wanted to let you know that in addition to Shandeh's fabulous prizes tonight, Amy and I are also giving away two copies of the KnittingHelp.com iPhone app. I am running the contest on Facebook so those who have iPhones, iPods, and iPads can join. To join, just find the Facebook status post where we mention the contest (currently the top post, but it might get bumped down) and post a comment. Shandeh, or rather her hubby, will randomly select the winners and she'll post their names. Here's the facebook link:

http://www.facebook.com/knittinghelp

And you can read about the app here:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/knittinghelp-video-reference/id405889801?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4

We released it earlier this month and it has been very well received by knitters. So much so that we are currently working on an Android version due out next month.

Best of luck to those who enter!

Sounds like a blast! Count me in! I'm hoping to finish my monkey from Itty-Bitty Toys before 2010 is out. I started it 6 weeks ago and made great progress until I got to the limbs and then life got in the way. I have so many other ideas on stuff to knit so I just need to finish it! :knitting:

Yes, there is something about those doxies... especially the rescue ones. Can't resist them! And they usually do live quite a long time.

My mother had one that got paralyzed at 4 years... who lived to be 14 years old. Little Cinder got my mom through the "empty nest" syndrome quite nicely!

A cruise! Oh, do tell! Tell me more! Where'd you go? Are you sunburnt?
What did you do?
Did you get any neat stuff?
Did they stuff you with all kinds of fantastic foods?
Neat-o!
Be happy to fill you in on the details. We sailed out of New York for a seven day cruise to Nassah The food on board was terrific There is one central cafeteria where we had breakfast and lunch and two beautiful dining rooms for dinner. W spent a day in Cape Canaveral and went to Coco beach the next day was spent on an island owned by the cruise line (Norwegian Cruise Lines) where we had a lunch on the shore. The only thing I bought were some new sunglasses although my d and gd each got a new watch. I saw the most beautiful emeralds but they were out of my price range. We had a stateroom with a balcony . I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I'll be knitting in the New Year - start the year the way I plan to continue, lots of yarn and knitting!

ENJOY! This, I guarantee, will cure what ails you! (Or you won't care, lol!)

I loved the free style meals My grandson, stationed at Ft. Hood went with us. He left here this morning to return to Texas and had his first flight out of Vt canceled so he missed his connection out of Dulles. He was lucky to get a flt on another airline and made it back before he was AWOL. I guess the Army is not as forgiving as the Air Force. I was getting hops back from California to Westover AFB and had to get a day extension to my leave . No problem.

I had to break up with my fiance once... left the diamond in his mailbox, went home and grabbed the four-needle sock I was knitting.

Sure enough, a couple of hours later, he came bursting into my house. Stayed on the far side of the room as I knitted with 4 sharp needles held in front of me, and ranted and raved.

I held firm and he finally kicked his way out of my house.

(He'd told me about how he and his friends would spend summer vacation down by a stream... and counted any girl that came down there as fair-game for rape. Then, seeing my expression, he said, "Oh, I never raped anyone. I just watched!")

ok im almost done for already! Ive been dealing with kids out of school and a teething baby for a week, so im so tired. But yet just got LO to bed and hoping i can stay awake for my time! I REALLY want to start the Traveling Women shawl using a lace weight yarn..its very pretty light blue, and is 80% baby alpaca and 20% silk...just soo soft! BUT- the pattern confuses me and im so scared im gonna screw it up!
My new years resloution is to knit my best..which means i am going to stop ignoring my screw ups ( im a lazy knitter!) and actually tear them out and start over. I also want to have NO Unfinished projects..so i will NOT start anything, stop and start another until the first is done...i hope i can abide by my rule :)

This is super cute! I might have to try one for next Christmas. I HATE sewing pieces together and have several projects that are finished but need to be sewn... so I'm sure I'd be right there with you for not having the arms and legs on :) On that note, I actually made effort to seek out toys that didn't involve any sewing this year... I made a couple cute pigs and elephants that were single pieces.

I'm home with brother and nephew, watching Cheers and That 70s Show (not at the same time). We've also had tostadas for dinner (beans, pork, pico de gallo, avocado, cheese on a crisp, flat corn tortilla - yum!) and been down the street to watch fireworks as well.

Very cute pattern, Sandy. Don't have the yarn to knit it tonight, but I definitely want to try it.

I still haven't finished my Mom's shawl I promised her. I keep messing up the stitching & it's not slipped sts either.. but wrong st at the wrong time in the pattern & don't notice it until a few rows afterwards. I will eventually get it done!
Ack! I hate when that happens! :frog:

I just finished the knitted Owl cozy for a mug.
http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Handmadeathome/owl-coffee-cup-cozie-2 It was very quick to knit.
Sweet! :inlove:

I'm fixin to get started on my new years knitting. I'm thinking about popping in a movie and pouring a glass of wine. :)
I've got a bottle of Biltmore Estate White Zinfandel chilling in the fridge, ready for the midnight toast with my hubby!
:clink:

I just joined. I've been following you on Facebook, but had not joined the forum. I will be casting on the mug cozy her in SOCAL. Happy New Year everyone!
Looks like you'll be able to celebrate with us all night! :woohoo:

knitting in the round really isn't that hard once you get used to it. I promise! I know it sounds scary, but once you try it it's really easy.
I agree. I remember the first time I tried it, I was nervous. But, after the first few rounds, it was SO EASY!

My mom collects monkeys! I had already printed this andplanned on making her some for next Christmas.

ok im almost done for already!
Well- im trying to stay up chickies...where's the boose? SP?:roflhard:

I understand being done in by kids. I had the responsibility of one 3 year old grand daughter today...had bunches of fun but I am tired too. I am here just now, just not sure how long.:cheering:

My SIL collects them too. I may have to make her one, as well. My original thought was that my son answers to 'monkey' and for Halloween when he was 1, I dressed him as a sock monkey. Sock monkey has a special place in my heart.

I've been reading through the thread and wanted to get my name in, too!
You're in! I hope you win! Crossed Fingers

Very cute pattern, Sandy. Don't have the yarn to knit it tonight, but I definitely want to try it.
Thanks! :)

OK, everybody....I'm getting this party started for real now. I'm putting all the names in a box, and shaking it up real good. My hubby will be drawing the first knitting book prize at 12:00 midnight, EST. The prizes are in a separate box, so he'll draw one of those also. It's the luck of the draw who wins, and WHAT they will win. Good luck to you all! Crossed Fingers

I will be removing the name of the winner from the box, and adding new names all night long as more people register for knitting book prizes.

If you are interested in registering for the KH iPhone app, you'll need to sign up on the KH Facebook page before midnight EST here: http://www.facebook.com/knittinghelp#!/knittinghelp
My hubby will be drawing the first winner of the iPhone app at 12:15 EST. The second name will be drawn at 12:45.

My Mom picked out the yarn for her shawl at the beginning of the summer... I believe I've restarted the darn thing more than a dozen times since then lol

@knittingfor7 I hear ya on the "finishing one before starting another". I did try that this year... for all of a few hours LOL I find I get bored easily with a project and need something on the go in many different forms so I can jump to another when I get bored with one. I'm also very impatient when it comes to my projects. I want them done NOW, not three months from now lol I was very proud of myself this year though. I redid a crocheted afghan my step-grandma had made almost 20 years ago that my brother inherited that had seen better days. It took me an entire year to get it done. It didn't end up being exactly like the older version as I put my own twist on it. I've got a pic of it up on my blog if anyone wants to see it.

Yes ma'am! 100% cotton will be more absorbent, most of the time. Acrylic will have good scrubbing qualities, especially if you use the old, scratchy stuff.

I prefer using crochet thread, #10, for my dishcloths. Has scrub-ability and is faster to dry. If you REALLY want to scrub... use crochet thread + fishing line. That'll scrub the bark off a tree!
