View Full Version : Pattern woes!!

I have only been knitting for a short time but I have completed a pair of socks by reading a pattern. I found a pattern that looked simple for a baby sweater. I knitted the first 2 rows in a kn stitch as the pattern states and then began the next two rows which are to be repeated 12 times as a "set-up pat".

Row 1: K9 for left front; yo, k1 for seam st; yo, k3 for sleeve; yo, k1 for seam st; yo, k18 for back; yo,k1 for seam st; yo,k3 for sleeve; yo, k1 for seam st; yo, k9 for right front - 54 sts.

Row 2: K4, purl across to last 4 sts, k4.

My problem is that when I repeat the pattern on the 3rd (and 5th, 7th, etc.) the pattern doesn't match because I have done several yo stitches to increase. When I get to the end of row 3, I don't have enough stitches to complete the row. I looked at the photo and it wouldn't make sense not to finish the row. Is there something that I am missing? :hair:

Yes, the YOs increase the sts, but you notice that on Row 1, there's a YO, k1, and another YO; these sts separate the sections and are where you do the following increases. So just do a YO on either side of that single K1 stitch and it will work. There's going to be 2 more sts per section every time you do an increase row.

Sorry..I still don't understand...when I do row 3, for example, the pattern still ends with 54 sts, but when I get to row 4, I knit the sts including the yo from row 3 and I now have 62 sts.

So when I get to row 5, I have a pattern for 54 sts but I have 62 sts.
This will increase by 8 sts every 2 rows.

How do I adjust for that?

Thanks for the help!

You have to knit 2 more sts for each section every RS row.

So R 3 is - K11 for left front; yo, k1 for seam st; yo, k5 for sleeve; yo, k1 for seam st; yo, k 20 for back; yo,k1 for seam st; yo,k5 for sleeve; yo, k1 for seam st; yo, k11 for right front - 62 sts.

R 5 - K 13, yo, k1 for seam st; yo, k7 for sleeve; yo, k1 for seam st; yo, k22 for back; yo,k1 for seam st; yo, k7 for sleeve; yo, k1 for seam st; yo, k13 for right front - 70 sts.

Etc....

I encountered an issue with this solution...each row increases by 8 sts with yo and if I increase by 2 kn sts in each section that is equivalant to 10 sts. That leaves me off by 2. Any ideas? Any section that I shouldn't increase?

Check again that there's 2 YOs on either side of the single knit stitch, you must have left out a pair.

I only count 8 ??? :wall:

Row 1: K9 for left front; yo, k1 for seam st; yo, k3 for sleeve; yo, k1 for seam st; yo, k18 for back; yo,k1 for seam st; yo,k3 for sleeve; yo, k1 for seam st; yo, k9 for right front - 54 sts.

Ooops I did say say 11, I forgot the front was in 2 parts, so after the first row of incs, you'll have 9 for each front, 5 for each sleeves and 20 on the back. Sorry for confusing you.

Is this something that is common in patterns? I was surprised that the pattern wouldn't be exact. Do you often have to "decide" what adjustments to make?

It would take too much space to write out the exact number of sts every row, so they do just say 'increase as before' or something. European patterns aren't even as detailed as regards to shaping. It's only difficult on your first pattern; once you've made one and see how they're constructed, then you understand how everything works.
