I'm making a bow knot scarf pattern I found on ravelry but I have a few questions.
making the slot... near the end of the slot part, it says (knit together 1 stitch from each needle twice. 17 stitches on the needle) SO HOW IS THERE 17??????
Am I missing something here?

How many stitches are on the needles now?

As for how many stitches on the needle, I'm not there yet. BUT as I start knitting the othe side of the slot (currently on stitch holder-) where do I get the yarn from to knit that piece???

do you have a link to the pattern?

When you start knitting the stitches on the stitch holder again there are some basic options:

if you knit a seperate piece (it sounds like a longer strip here), you need new yarn attached there.

So either you cut your yarn (with a tail to weave in) when you stop working on the other section (it often reads "Break yarn"). Or in some patterns you may need that yarn to stay right there and start over with a seperate ball of yarn.
If in doubt: usually you break off at the old spot and start anew on the next part of the instruction.

in a few cases, you will rejoin the stitches by just taking them back on the needle and knitting with the yarn that is there. But I do not think, that that is your instruction here.

Posting a link to the pattern will make it easier to help you.

sorry, the link does not work. You have to enter it as a hyperlink. There is the green-blue ball-icon with 2 chain-links below it, right up top in the field above your posting editor. Klick on it and enter the url (link) into the window that opens.
Then we can see it / follow it.

Edit: I did google for this one:

so, let me do the math in a way that you can follow (I hope. It is always hard to make others understand the inner logic of one's head)

you increase until you have 24 stitches. So that is what you start the slot with.
you seperate these stitches evenly on 2 needles (one here, one there... and so on).
you work on section up for the given number of rows, in 1x1 ribbing.
you break your yarn (cut it with several inches of tail, that you weave in at the end).

you rejoin the yarn on the second section and work the same amount of rows.
you do NOT break your yarn but keep knitting now.

what you do to close the gap:

you have 2 needles on the left hand side, each with 12 stitches.
now you work as follows:
knit together 1 stitch from 1st needle with one from 2nd needle (you can put them onto the same needle to do so, if you need. I would work them off from both needles at the same time).
so these 2 stitches now made only one on the right hand needle.

then you knit a stitch from the 1st needle.
then you knit a stitch from the 2nd needle.
now you have 3 stitches on the right needle, right?

when you repeat this section you make 3 stitches for 2 on your first needle (and work off as many stitches on the 2nd needle).
so when working this over 10 stitches (all but the last 2 on each needle)
you made 10 stitches into 15, right? (two into 3, 5 times. That means 3x5 = 15)

so now you have 15 stitches on your right needle and 2 on each of the left needle.

your pattern now wants you to knit 2 tog with one of the stitches from each needle.
do that once and you have 16 stitches.

do that once again (with the last 2 stitches) and you have 17.

I hope I explained things understandably.
