I think I had more fun designing and drafting this pattern than anything I've ever made.
It took 3 weeks of trial and error just to create stitch patterns.

Orthopedic issues have me knitting only small things now. This is size 9 months. I used measurements from several books.

It's Caron's SPA yarn. I really like this yarn, it's very soft, light weight and machine washes and dries nicely. But it does require a watchful eye for splitting.

Front 1.

Front 2. Yup, thanks to a neckline without shaping, there are two fronts.

I did two rows reversed above the wrist ribbing to make the cuff fold up neatly.

Here's the placket open.

And another view of a sleeve.

Thanks a bunch. You'll get there. Start slow and persevere.
It took me years, starting with simple changes to printed patterns and working up to drafting my own.

Now I keep looking for new and different challenges,
and I have no other job responsibilities at this time in my life.

These are really appreciative young parents. I'd only put that much effort into something for very special people.
I already been told she will keep it forever.

Thank you very much.
The pattern is one of those unwritten creative things
that rattled around in my brain until I finished it.
I design using "my signature" method. :frog:

WOW! That is really interesting and cool. Did you design the heart "cable"? It is really neat. I like the way it turned out with two fronts. Such nice knitting too. Just great. :woot:

Nice! I hope the parents of that baby really thank you for that! It's unique but looks as finished as something you buy at the store

Although I worked out the patterns for all heats I used on this sweater,
the method of increase and decrease I got from a small heart in Alice Starmore's book Fisherman's Sweaters.

The open heart is inspired by the Valentine Cable I've used many times on little girls' fisherman sweaters over the last 3 decades
and is in Barbara Walker's first volume of knitting stitches.

These are exceptional parents. They are not only genuinely appreciative of a hand knit gift,
but they have a grasp of how much time and effort went into it.

And many thanks to everyone here. It's nice to have a place to get inspired,
and hopefully inspire others to continually expand their knitting skills.
I know there's still more new things out there for me.
