View Full Version : Sizing for toddler sweater-Sleeve length

I'm making a the "Newborn Topdown Cardigan" sweater for a friend's baby. The baby is due in a month, but I'm greatly increasing the size of the sweater because in Texas, a sweater for this time of year will be worn for a month and then put in a box. So I'm trying to make it for next year. The family runs very tall--big babies, so I'm knitting on size 8 needles holding 2 strands of DK together.

Here's what I have so far:
Back length: 12.5"
Chest: 23"
I'm not sure if the proportions are even right. If not....well, I don't know what I'll do.
Here's my question: How long should the sleeves be to make it proportional. (It's okay if it fits in a year or two. I just want it to be the right proportions.)

So have I totally screwed this up? Or do I just keep knitting and finish the sleeves. If so, what length should the sleeves be?

Maybe this will help?

That sounds about right for a size 2, and believe me a 1 year old can wear a size 2, especially if they're kinda tall, I have a GD like that. The finished size should be a couple inches larger than the actual chest measurement, your sleeves might be a little long, but they can always be rolled up. Here's a body size chart (http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/babysize.html) for babies that might help you with the sleeve length, there's a link to child sizes too.

Thank you both SO much! I have to finish this by next week and REALLY don't have time to re-knit!
