View Full Version : FO: Helix Nebula Blanket

So I'm a big nerd, right? I'm taking part in Ravelry's Nerd Wars (go Team Browncoats!) and just completed my first project. The category is "Science: Nebulas" and the project is supposed to be inspired by a nebula.

I chose the Helix Nebula (http://johnflawler.com/Helix%20Nebula.jpg) because of how vibrant the colours were. I did a pinwheel blanket (my first!) and although it is on the small side, I'm totally pleased with the finished project. It just needs to be washed and blocked proper now.

I LOVE it, great job!

DH and I have been watching astronomy shows all winter....we esp like all Hubble stuff, into outer space, exploring the galaxies is my favorite. We own the movie 'Cosmic Voyage', which (did you know?) was banned from theaters in the USA a few years ago, by Christian Fundamentalist groups because it intimated that the universe isn't just 6000 years old, made by God....but is rather billions of years old, and changes by evolutionary processes (which doesn't preclude a God, actually...)

There are many great astronomy series on Oasis channel, sometimes PBS, and sometimes EQTR channel, with photographs from the Hubble spacecraft as well as some CGI, showing how solar systems and galaxies grow, interact etc....Fascinating stuff!

I did not hear about the Nerd Wars, but the nebula and your blanket are twins, for sure! Well done, nicely translated impression!

Smee, what a great blanket! Nothing wrong with being an astronomy geek.

Woodi, 'Cosmic Voyage' was not banned from theaters, it died away because the producers wanted sales from video tapes, and it got bad reviews. The more quickly out of theaters, the less reviews. People just weren't going to see it, rather watch escapist stuff that doesn't make them think.
