I'm new to knitting and I'm getting on extra stitch after every row. What am I doing wrong?

Look at this thread about extra stitches (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32886). Most commonly, if you're knitting every row, when you turn to work the next one, many new knitters put the yarn over the top of the needle which pulls up the first st and makes it look like 2 separate ones. Hold your yarn out to the side a little and you can see the one leg of that first st easier.
