Hi, I am knitting a baby blanket and I need help understanding this pattern, please.

Center section cast 197sts. 1st row: k5. (work 1st row Panel Pat. K9)6times. Work 1st row Panel Pat. K5.

Now the first row of the Panel Pat. is as follows k2.yo.k4.k2tog.yo.Sl2.k1.p2sso.yo.ssk.k4.yo.k2.

Now when I follow this pattern instruction I end up lacking more sts than 197!

This is how I understood this pattern first I cast the 197 sts. then I k5 then the 1st row of the panel pat. then k9. 6 times repeated, then one more panel pat 1st row and k5.

But when I reach the step of knitting the 1st panel pat after 6 times I can't proceed because there is no more sts left. Could you please help me understand it better? Thanks.

P.S my pat. is taken from bernat traditions 530187. Thanks

You're probably doing a knit st with the YOs which are only a wrap around the needle, then you go on to k4 or the dec. It's not yo 5 knits or yo k dec, you don't knit a stitch for the yo.

Try putting a st marker between each pattern repeat. Each panel should be 19 sts + k9. That number should stay the same over the row (the increases and decreases balance out). When you finish a repeat, you should still have 28 sts between the markers.

Thank you for your help. But the problem is with number of the cast on st. 197 will not be enough to knit 6 times panel pat. along with the 6 times 9 st. along with the extra panel pt plus the 10 st. in the beg. and the end. I am not sure if I am presenting the problem properly...I hope so.

Thanks.

As I count it there's: 5k, (panel of 19 +9k) times 6, panel of 19, k5.
5+ 6(28) + 19 +5=197

Are you thinking there are more sts in the panel?

Well yes, here is how Iam counting it: The actual sts are used is 21st because k2+k4+k2tog+sl2+k1+p2sso+ssk (according to the pat. I have it says slip next 2 st. knitwise one at a time then knit through back loops together.)+k4+k2=21

Is that right?

I think that you're counting the 2 slipped sts twice: once when you slip them and then a second time when you pass the 2 slipped sts over. That would make the difference. It should be 19 in the pattern panel.

Yes that's right, the panel has "sl2.k1 p2sso" (3sts). So does the st count for the panel make sense to you, the 19 sts? If not you could try casting on 19 sts and doing one repeat of the panel just to see it on a small swatch.

Yes, you sl2 and k1. The p2sso were already counted as the slip sts, but you seem to be counting them again.
