View Full Version : Cables

I am knitting my first blanket with cables. The pattern calls for me to knit 8 rows (knit 1 row, purl 1 row, knit 1 row, etc) and then do the cable row. Then I am supposed to knit 8 more. My question...after the first 8 rows, the cable row is row 9. So, when I start over again on another set of 8 rows, should I start with a purl row since it is technically on the "wrong side" and and it is row 10? does that make sense? Thanks for the help!

That makes sense. Do the cable on row 9 knit row, turn and do row 10, a purl row and then the next row is row 1 (a knit row) which starts off the count of 8 more rows till the next cable on a row 9.

So, you are saying that there are more than 8 rows between each cable row then?? And each cable row would then be a knit row? I am so confused.

If you do 8 rows and then a cable row on the 9th row, then 8 more rows, the next cable will wind up on a purl row. It's possible that that's your pattern but it's unusual. What is the pattern? Can you give a link to it or just quote a few lines, not the entire pattern?

Thank you so much for your help. I can't go on with my project until I figure this out!

Yes, it looks like there are really 9 rows between cables. Work the pattern for 8 rows, cable on the 9 row (RS), work row 10 according to the "WS" directions and then start counting over again with the next RS row which will be row 1. That makes sense with the photo and the cable directions which are clearly to cable on a RS row. I think the WS directions for row 10 were inadvertantly omitted.

When ever I have done cables it has been with an even row count and the cable crossing has been on the right side of the knitting. I have to admit this is new for me. Having given this a minutes thought, it shouldn't make much, if any, difference as long as you do the cable cross the same each time. interesting....

You're welcome. It's a truly gorgeous blanket. Good luck with it!
