My pattern lists the gauge as follows:

20 x 4"

Does this mean I should knit 20 stitches to measure 4 inches?

It means you should get 20 sts across a 4" measurement. The goal is to find out how many sts per inch (or 4"), not to make a 4" square. It's better to cast on at least 4 or 6 more sts, then count the sts in 4" across the middle without including the edge sts. They're a little different than the ones in the middle and will curl under.

Thank you so much Suzeeq! ☺

Now this make sense! Plain and simple language is so beneficial.

Thanks again,
