is there a difference between M1 and M1 L? I know how to do both M1L and M1R, but what woulkd M1 mean??

There's no real difference in M1 and M1L, though a M1 can just be a backward loop around the needle. Take a look at the increases page. If you're to do just one m1 or several across a row, the m1L is fine.
