View Full Version : Baby Coat - Pattern Help Needed

I'd like some help on the following pattern:
Shaping armholes (back of coat)
1st row - cast off 2 sts, c2f, k1, *k1, c2f,k1, rept from * to last 2 sts, k2.
2nd row - cast off 2 sts, p2, k1, *k1, p2, k1, rept from * to end.
3rd row - k2tog, k1, *c2f, k2, rept from * to last 5 sts, c2f,k1, k2tog.
4th row - *k2, p2, rept from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Keeping patt correct k2tog at each end of the needle on the next and every following alt row until 24 sts remain.
My questions is: where it says to keep pattern correct, is there a type of pattern that i should follow or just keep knitting the same rows and where it says cast off i replace it with k2tog?

Keep the pattern correct is telling you to keep the sts between the asterisks in the correct place in order to form the pattern repeat. Presumably, you've been following this pattern for the back all along and they want you to continue that pattern. After the initial cast off on rows 1 and 2, row 3 says to k2tog at each end of the row and they want you to do that k2tog on every other row (5, 7, 9 etc) until there are 24 sts left. Don't replace the cast offs in rows1 and 2 with k2tog, just do k2tog at each end of the row1 and 3 repeats.

so how can i work k2tog in row 1 and 2 without removing the cast off...can you explain better please?

Sorry for confusing. After the initial cast off of 2sts for the armholes on rows 1 and 2, you won't be casting off 2 sts again. As you said, you want to replace the cast off with a k2tog at each end of row1, but only the cast off in row1. Ignore the cast off in row2, k2tog at each end of row3, and repeat with k2tog at each end of row1, row3, row1, row3 etc.

Pretend the first few sts aren't there after you've cast off and decreased, and looking at the sts that are left, purl the purl sts from previous rows and knit the knit sts. Work the cables every other row the way you've been doing them. These rows you've copied into your post show how to make the first few BO and dec sts. So you don't 'remove' the cast off, rows 3 and 4 show how to knit the rows with the k2togs.
Row 5 would be - k2 tog,* c2f, k2, rept from * to last 4 sts, c2f, k2tog - I think and Row 6 would be like row 4. Then for Row 7 is k2 tog, k3* c2f, k2, rept from * to last 3 sts, k1 k2tog, and row 8 is also the same as row 4. You keep the same sts in cables where you can and if there's not enough, just knit them as you lose the sts at the ends. By the time you get done with row 8 you should be able to see how it works.

so from what i got is that you kept working on row 3 and 4 until 24 sts remain

Not quite, you keep working the sts like R 3 and 4, except they'll begin and end with 1 st less from the previous rows because of the decreases. I wrote out rows 5 and 7 for you, that should give you an idea how they're worked. Basically knit 2 between the cable crosses on the RS rows, and knit 2 p2 on the WS rows. The purl sts would be the ones you did the cables on the RS rows, the k2 would be the ones that you k2 on the RS row.

i will try it out as it's getting a bit complex to follow such instructions....in the meantime thanks for your time

I think the trick to doing this part of a pattern is to remember to look at your stitches. You really just want to continue the pattern placement of c2f that you've got going in the sweater. At the same time, every other row, decrease one stitch at each end.
`Good luck with the sweater and come back if it isn't working out.

Thanks, salmonmac, that's kinda what I was trying to say and not being so clear about it.
