I have knitted several cable sweaters but am currently knitting one which uses a chart to describe the pattern.

The chart is divided into three sections but reads from right to left vs. left to right. Divides are: A, B, C, D. Directions say to begin at A work to C and repeat between B and C ending at D. Why would the pattern read from right to left vs. left to right?

Charts are always read from R to L on the RS and in the round, and from L to right on WS rows.

Because most people knit right handed and so knit from the left needle to the right needle. The sts are knit from right to left and the charts reflect that. I've actually never seen a chart that was set up any other way.
