Hello, I wonder if anybody could help me understand a bit of a knitting pattern please? They are fingerless mitts and the link is here:

I don't get this bit:

Join thumb seam.

With RS facing, rejoin yarn, pick up and knit 4 sts from base of thumb, k to end. – 51 sts.



By join thumb seam does it mean to sew it up now? I also don't get where I am supposed to add the new stitches.

No it means you're going to make the thumb. 'Rejoin yarn' just means to use a strand of yarn and start knitting with it. You might have put the thumb sts on hold and CO a couple sts to the hand after that. You pick up stitches in them, plus one before and one after the thumb sts to close up the gap and you should have 51 sts for the whole thumb when you do that.

Join thumb seam means to sew up or seam the rows that you have just finished. You can use the working yarn from the thumb cast off to do this. Then use a new end of yarn to pick up 4sts along the bottom end of the thumb (near where your thumb joins your hand) and knit to the end of the row. You’ll now be ready to work complete rows across the palm, base of the thumb and the back of the hand.
