It's time for our 6th Annual New Year's Eve Party!
:woohoo: :cheering: :woohoo:

This coming Monday evening, December 31st, our online party will last 4 hours (from 11:30 PM to 3:30 AM, Eastern US time).
http://bestsmileys.com/party/1.gif Happy New Year 2013!! http://bestsmileys.com/party/4.gif

The most exciting part of our celebration will be PRIZES (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1364335&postcount=2)!!
:cheering: :woohoo: :cheering:

To be eligible, just post a reply to this discussion (deadline to enter is 11 PM EST, Dec 31), telling me which prize(s) you are interested in*.

Prizes from Knitting Help and Shandeh (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1364335&postcount=2) will be given at 12:00, 12:15, 12:30 and 12:45 for each time region (Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific). I will be drawing names out of a hat to determine the winners.

Last year, we had a wonderful time during our party, talking, knitting together (2013 KAL here (http://shandehknitting.blogspot.com/2012/12/new-years-eve-2013-party-on-knitting.html)), and sharing stories about our New Year celebrations all over the world.

I can't wait to see you all again this year!
:muah:

* This year, you will need to designate which prize(s) you are interested in, so I can place your name in the appropriate hat(s). This way, you won't win a prize you don't want. Keep in mind that YOU MUST REGISTER HERE IN THE KH FORUM by 11 PM ON MONDAY, DEC 31 to participate.

Winners do not have to be online at the time of the drawing. I will notify you by private message in the forum if you are a winner.

Hello again everyone! :waving:

Each year, we usually knit a project together to commemorate our celebration for the new year. This year's project is a MYSTERY!

You can see details on making our KAL project right here:
KH 2013 New Year KAL (http://shandehknitting.blogspot.com/2012/12/new-years-eve-2013-party-on-knitting.html)

If you want to join in the KAL, just get two skeins of FELTABLE WOOL yarn in contrasting colors (light and dark), and some size 8 knitting needles. You will also need a bag of rice.

So... I only started knitting a few days ago. I don't know how to use needles. I've been using looms. Will this project work with looms? I know how to knit and purl stitches and e wrap. That's the extent of my skills. If the looms will work I can run out and grab some wool! It would be fun since I also don't know what felting is! I read a little about it today but the article was vague.

I don't think that duplicate stitch will work on a loom. But, this is a great project for beginning knitting with needles!

Thank you for all your wonderful videos! Your site is how I learned to knit. I had tried several times before but just couldn't get my hands to work right while holding the yarn in my left hand (at the time I had 25 years of crocheting muscle memory fighting me) but your Continental Knitting Videos put the yarn in my left hand and from there, there was no turning back. My Mom is a new knitter too thanks to your videos.

Hope everyone has a wonderful and safe New Year!

Our party will get started soon! :cheering:

I am busy putting all the registrations on a spreadsheet. I am clicking "Thanks" on your post when your entry has been registered.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE DEADLINE TO ENTER FOR PRIZES IS IN JUST 45 MINUTES! (11 PM EST - 12-31-12)

I will need about 30 minutes to finish up the entries, so I can do the prizes when our party starts. This year, instead of putting names in a box, I am putting them on a spreadsheet, and using an online random dice roller. Our prizes are going digital! :roflhard:

I've only crocheted one project (an afghan for my son when I lived in England) ...then a couple years ago took a couple knitting classes at a shop in town. I like knitting much better...although I have friends who prefer crochet because they say it works up so much faster. Each to their own...although I'd love to learn crochet for edgings, etc. ;)

Shandeh
12-31-2012, 11:32 PM
I enjoy both crafts. And it's a good thing I do. Sometimes, my wrist will start to bother me if I crochet for too long. So, I switch to knitting for a while, and everything settles down.

Like you said, it's great to use crochet for edging items. I do that a LOT!

Thanks! The Carolinian Shawl is actually VERY EASY. Mostly garter stitch. And the crochet scarf is simple too. That's why I love working for Bernat. Their patterns are usually so simple to follow. Of course, occasionally they design a few that make me scratch my head a bit. But, I refuse to let a pattern defeat me. :X:

I'm from southeastern Michigan. I learned how to crochet when I was 9, and made a granny square poncho when I was 10! I also taught myself how to knit around that time, but I couldn't really get into it. A few years ago, I picked up the knitting needles again and haven't stopped. Well, I didn't make it to the store to get the knitting needles and yarn for the mystery project. It sounds like soooo much fun, but raining plus cold equals arthritis ouch. So I worked on my loom tube scarf. Its about 7 feet now and ready to come off of the loom!! Yay!

I just found the forums today and haven't thoroughly looked around, but does anyone else use looms or is everyone needles only? I'm starting with just a set of Knifty Knitter looms, but am enjoying it enough to start looking around at board looms for a tighter stitch and larger projects. I want to learn needles as well, but I've been following a lady on YouTube who also has arthritis and she said she can't use the needles as much as the looms anymore because it bothers her cervical spine. I have issues in my cervical and lumbar spine as well as hands and wrists. And on good days when the pain is managed well I'm usually painting.....

I'm from southeastern Michigan. I learned how to crochet when I was 9, and made a granny square poncho when I was 10! I also taught myself how to knit around that time, but I couldn't really get into it. A few years ago, I picked up the knitting needles again and haven't stopped. Crocheting really hurts my hands, but knitting is very relaxing. Tonight I am working on a Party Lace Scarf:
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/party-lace-scarf
It is turning out beautifully. :knitting: :knitting:

Crocheting hurt my hands as well...I wondered if it was just me when I realized knitting doesn't...

And that is BEAUTIFUL!

I've heard some others who were unhappy with Mosaic. But, it's like that with every yarn. Some people love it, others don't. That's why we have so many wonderful choices of yarn, and so many different yarn companies!

I have cervical spine arthritis and pinched nerves in my lumbar spine. I don't notice knitting makes a difference either way. You may have to pace yourself to learn, but once you relax you may be fine.

This is basically a hand knitting forum, but there are a few who loom knit as well. Have fun tonight. :)

Your scarf is beautiful! I crocheted from the time I was a teenager, off and on, and have made lots of crocheted afghans, some sweaters, other stuff, but it's hard on my hands. Knitting is much easier for me BUT I found an ergonomic crochet hook handle and with it I think I can do some crocheting again...if I ever finish a knit project or 3.

Well, I didn't make it to the store to get the knitting needles and yarn for the mystery project. It sounds like soooo much fun, but raining plus cold equals arthritis ouch. So I worked on my loom tube scarf. Its about 7 feet now and ready to come off of the loom!! Yay!

I've watched videos for loom knitting and it looks like I'd have a really hard time with using the hook thing or whatever it is. I think it requires more dexterity than my fingers possess.

Awww...that is so kind of you to say!!!! :muah:

The girls are doing really well! One of my girls carries several skeins of yarn in her purse. I took a picture of it...must find it. It's so cute!!

She also finished her first scarf...did a lovely job. I helped her add tassels. Another of my girls is working on a baby blanket. I saw another girl carrying her knitting to a basketball game! I also met the mother of one of my girls in the office one day. She said that her daughter had been trying to teach her to knit but that it was too hard.

The girls keep on coming. I try to offer a place where they are accepted. The knitting is secondary, but it's the draw that gets them into my room.

One of the girls told me one day that "Word is spreading about you." Last year, this would not have been a good thing. I'm tough. This year, I'm taking it as a compliment.

I might have to alter the rest to get it to work with the dk sole. :teehee: Knitting may keep me out of trouble but I sure can make trouble for myself with my knitting. Knitting is such a stress-reliever for me. When I have a rough week at work, I love my weekends so I can just relax and knit and unwind.

I agree, knitting IS a great stress reliever!!

I really want to knit socks but I do not know how to use more than two kneedles.

If you use a long circular needle you can magic loop and don't need dpns. There are free videos at the top and one of them is magic loop, I think.

Two circs is my favorite method...sooo easy and no shifting of needles or stitches!!

I'm sure you all have heard this a thousand times....but here it is one thousand and one times.....

When I first started knitting, I searched everywhere so I could buy this "magic loop".

I was clueless!

When I learned to knit, I taught myself by buying a set of straight needles, some red heart, and a pamphlet at Michael's. It took me a whole day to figure out that after you knit the first row, you had to turn your work. I could not figure out what do after the first row!

What a fun thread to read. I'm falling asleep, but wanted to stop in to say hi.

My New Year's resolution is to knit more socks. I've knit two pairs, but know that it will take more than that to really get good at them.

Beautiful pics, everyone! Happy New Year!

Thing is, no matter how many needles you use to knit a sock, whether you use dpns, two circs, or one circ, you're still only actually knitting with 2 needles....the rest are just stitch holders. It's easier to do than it looks, especially if you just do what the pattern says, step by step, and try not to overthink it.

(And this from a self-taught knitter!) :)

Good luck! but most of all Enoy Knitting!
If it ain't fun, why bother?

Two circs is my favorite method...sooo easy and no shifting of needles or stitches!!

No matter how hard I try to make sure I do it right, I always end up using the wrong needle when I use 2 circs. They can be a metal set and a wood set and I still do it!
