Happy Easter!

I recently bought two skeins of Misti Alpaca Chunky, and just finished a hat. I love the softness and the colors (Magic Flute) but the skein tangled like a thousand hairy snakes mating! I swear I spent more time untangling the stuff than I did knitting. DH, who spends a lot of time lamenting the amount of animal hair he vacuums up, was especially dismayed by all the clumps of alpaca clinging to the easy chair I knit in.

So, when you take the yarn out of the band, are you supposed to wind it into a ball or something? It tangled instantly, seems like.

This seems like a dumb question, but this is coming from someone who is definitely clueless. I just knit my first tam. It looked more like a beanie, and I was sort of disappointed, because I liked the yarn I used (Classic Elite Liberty Wool). I spent a fair amount of time on it, though, so I wore it to work a few times. People even said they liked it. Then I ran across something about how you had to BLOCK a tam with a dinner plate to get the finished shape! I did that, and, voila! It now actually looks like a tam! As Homer Simpson would say, "D'oh!"

If the yarn comes in a hank (that twisted circle of yarn) you can unwind it and wind a center pull ball (http://www.knittinghelp.com/video/play/winding-a-center-pull-ball). If the yarn comes in a ball or a skein, you don't need to rewind it but it helps to find the inner end of yarn and pull yarn from the center. That way the ball doesn't roll around as much.
You can also put the ball of yarn into a container or a plastic bag with just a small opening and that'll keep it from tangling and shedding.
Glad the tam worked out so well. Happy Easter!
