I was working on my laptop, and had to get up to get something from the kitchen. When I came back, I found my cat Chai just chilling:

This is not a very good picture, but this is my baby, Alfalfa. His coloring is very bright, but the photo doesn't really show it. His head is bright yellow. He is very spoiled. :D

I really, really like Kelly's little Howie!

I bet we all wear our hair in buns too.

:rofling: I wore my hair down to school today and SEVEN kids asked me if i was going out/on a date/ to dinner/to a job interview, and our school counselor said she saw "someone" standing by the copier and didn't realize it was me until I laughed.
I *always* wear it up, either in a bun or a clip... and it was back up again today after second period.

I don't have any more pictures of my kitties to post; the rest are all too big. We were considering adopting a greyhound last summer though! But, alas, there was not a good match b/t us and the dog :verysad: But maybe next summer... We'd need to get a fence, too, and....

Amy, we need a "Rambling" emoticon!!! :D

I really, really like Kelly's little Howie!

Thanks so much!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the name Alfalfa! I also have parakeets, but they dont like me. They are just happy being together.

My hair is not in a bun, because I can't for the life of me figure out how to make one...I would like to wear one of those cool, "messy" buns. I even got so desperate as to ask for bun lessons from a 12 year old!

I have three ferrets (and one pajama wearing BF). Here's a reasonably clear shot of my kids, and one shot of many (like 50 - thanks to digital cameras and large memory cards!) showing how difficult it is to get three ferrets (and one pajama wearing BF) to hold still

You can't really see the disaster in the background that is my knitting/midterms/tiny house mess... *grin*

I've always wanted one of those....a pajama wearing BF, I mean....do they eat very much, Yellow? And, can you teach them tricks? :rofling:

Unfortunately, my 17 year old KittyBug died a few weeks ago. I miss him so much and seeing these pictures really makes me happy for you all! Do appreciate these furry ones!

I do have this new cat, however, to keep me company . . . not quite as furry as I'd like, but she's trying!

Gat, Im SO SO sorry about your kitty! I lost a dog 2 Christmases ago & I miss her every day & have DEFINITELY developed a closer relationship with my pets since then! HUGS to you!!!!

OK - THAT pet may just be cuter, and maybe even more rare, than Yellow's pajama-wearing boyfriend.

And, for your cat, here's a mouse for her to play with!

Nik, glad to see another Rottie fan in the group. We rescued a female Rottie in our area last July. She is great and our kids love her. When I finally get around to taking pictures of WIP, the hat I finished, I will take one of my big baby and send it. She is great!

Yellowness, your ferrets are awesome! My boyfriend used to have a ferret and two rottweilers and the ferret would bite the rotts noses if they tried to mess with them...LOL.

KellyK your doggies are soooo cute. Nuno, your dog is awesome too. Everyone has such awesome looking pets.

I posted a couple pics of mine on another thread, but since we have a pet one, I'll post them here :D

There is a flock of about 25 Quaker Parakeets that live here in Berwyn YEAR ROUND! They've been here a LONG time, and there is another flock that lives in Chicago in the Hyde Park neigborhood. It is WILD to see them at our feeder next to sparrows & starlings!

DotMom61
03-16-2005, 10:05 PM
Thanks, Jivewhistle & Sara ... Yes, Quakers are fun little birds. She is only about a year old, and her vocabulary astounds us. She has almost all of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" down, and that's just for starters. I had read that they can be pretty aggressive, so we worked really hard to socialize her. She's great with just about anybody who comes in the house.

The lizards, on the other hand, are just afraid.

I was just down in the Hyde Park area today!! I had no idea there were wild Quakers in this area. (We live in St. Charles, by the way.) I can only imagine the racket that flock must make. Do they have a big nest anywhere?

OH! I didnt notice where you were from until just now!

I dont know very much about the Hyde park flock, Ive only read about them in the paper & in the Chicago Ornithological Society newsletter (Yes, my hubby & I are birdwatching geeks!)

But, about the flock here in Berwyn....they DO make a MAJOR racket! There is never any doubt when they are visiting our feeders! We really only see them in the winter....they find their own food in the summer, although we will see a couple every once in a while.

Actually, I forgot...I have pictures!

My mom was the same way, but at the same time she was strangely intrigued by them....she sat for my 3 parakeets while I was on vacation, all she had to do was slip the food in the side, not even open the cage.

Well, by the time we came home, she had taken to having my brother let them out to fly around! She would hide under a blanket until they settled down, then start "peeking" out at them....HYSTERICAL.

Anyway, Al & I bought her a baby keet of her own....it couldnt fly yet, so they had time to get to know each other before "Buddy" could really do anything to freak her out. Now, this bird gives her KISSES and mom calls me to have me talk to Buddy on the PHONE or to tell me what her new favorite game or toy is! They are BEST FRIENDS!

Nik --

My poor m-i-l is the same way. I feel kinda guilty when she comes to watch the kids for us, and she has to put up with this little feathered noise in the corner! Plus, Maggie is somewhat spoiled, and when we sit down to eat a meal, she expects to get her share, too. If she doesn't, then she pesters us endlessly ... "Is it good?" "Look!" "It's good!" ... until we give her something.

:rofling: ha ha ha ... I just re-read the above, and I'd like to clarify that it's the *bird*, not the m-i-l who pesters us and begs for food!!!

I love the Quaker (Monk) pictures -- the kids were amazed to see them eating at a feeder! How cool! We only get boring sparrows and an occasional cardinal or chickadee. We are birdwatching geeks, too, and we really miss the variety we had when we lived in the woods down in Kentucky.

Nik, I know you're not the only one. I once had a bunch of people at my house for an event. One woman's husband warned me in advance that his wife is very, very afraid of birds. Long-story-short, my bird got loose and zoomed through the house, right over the woman's head. She literally ran screaming, out the front door. I felt so bad. It took her a while to calm down and come back in.

I really, really want a doggie. Everyone's pets are so cute.

Beautiful Dane! Disney just released "The Ugly Dachshund" on DVD. It is my 5yo DD's favorite movie. She wants a Dane awfully much. Unfortunately, we rent, so no pets right now. Truthfully, she would take any pet she could get. Bird, rat, rattlesnake, whatever.

OOOOOHHHH!! I *love* Great Danes, and there is not chance in the world of my ever owning anything that large and furry. :crying: My husband's whole family is anti furry pets. They have some pretty serious allergies, and both of my children and I are allergic, too. I'm waiting for someone to come up with a miraculous cure for allergies (among other things).

In the meantime, I'll have to live vicariously through people like you! What a handsome fellow he is!

HILARIOUS!!!

Nicoley, your kitty is GORGEOUS. One like that adopted DH an I 2 halloween's ago, but she "tooted" so bad we had to take her to the humane society; it was very sad, we named her and everything :verysad: But between her stinky toots and our other kitties being so jealous, we knew we couldn't keep her. But, good news, someone adopted her right away. :D

I have to scan more pics of my kitties now, people! (someday DH will move into the 1990s and get us a digicam :wall: )

I love this thread! All of the pets are so cute! Here are my contributions!

Rufus - He was a stray that wouldn't go away. Thank goodness! Before he found our house I believe he was abused. It took him a long time to trust us but now he's living the good life in the house! He's a Walker Coonhound and the only thing he hunts for now is his next meal!

Maggie - She has been with me since she was about 1 month old, she's a Rat Terrior. When I first got her I couldn't leave her home alone (except for work) so I took her everywhere she just hid in my purse! She's a little spoiled...

Whiskers - The black cat - She was born in my bedroom. Her mama was another stray that I took in because she was pregnant. We had her for 15 years. We lost her in Oct. 2004.

Fluffers - The white and grey cat - We have had her for about 13 or 14 years. She has a personality all her own. She's my knittin' buddy. She doesn't chew my yarn very often but sits on my lap when I knit. Sometimes she's more comfy than I am... Go figure.

Max says "Thank you" ;) . He's a 4 year old male, coloring is gray merle, his full name is Maximillion von Meistersinger (so now you know why he's called Max)...lol. But like Bumper (who's a real cutie too)...his name fits!! I got him as a rescue last year from an elderly couple who couldn't keep him due to health problems. And you're right Kelly...danes are really gentle giants.

Speaking of cheezy pets...here is my kitty, Butters, who thinks he actually fits in the top of the Velveeta box!!

It's okay with me, Hilde.

It's so funny that he's in a box in the first place, because he's never been one to get into boxes. He usually prefers paper bags on the floor or he crawls under the bedcovers at night.

And I must confess to everyone...Butters has his own jazzy little theme song too.

However, I will spare y'all the details. It's just nice to know I'm not the only one who makes up songs for their pets. ;)

OK - here we go.....

First, HUGS to you, Gats....I know how ya feel.

My Katie was only 8 when she died 2 Christmases ago from sudden kidney failure. We still dont know exactly what happened because she was always SO healthy! She was a regular fixture with me at work (Retirement Community) and she made SUCH a difference in the lives of my residents and staff....the whole place mourned with me. If it's even possible, I feel SO much closer to Maddie, my Lhasa, who howled every time she checked "their room" for two weeks, and the 2 additional pooches who have been sharing my life since then....

I just ran across this web site, and it occurred to me that the dog lovers on this thread would enjoy it: Gone to the Dogs (http://www.gone2thedogs.com/). Click on the dog in the picture, and you will be presented with the (C)anine (A)lgorithmic (T)ransfer (S)ystem which will tell you which breed of dog you would be if you died and came back as a dog.

I was a Norwegian Elk Hound. I'm not quite sure how to take that. :??

Thank-you, amy! I'm a new knitter and I was directed to this site, so I've been reading eagerly. I just finished my first knitting project tonight. :D

Oh, and my dog is definitely a total sweetie... though her Beagle side can get the best of her sometimes, haha.

Well thank you, Sara (and everyone else too) for being so kind. I'm still a-hurtin' pretty sore today. I cried so much I thought I was getting stye-eye.

Though it might look it, he doesn't have a Fun Fur texture (which'd be like a dearly departed Scottish Terrier I once knew and loved)....he's more like Angora. But I'd have loved every inch of that Angora if I knew how best to take care of it. Maybe sometime down the road when the quality of my life and financial situation improves.

I was blessed to have him for the short time I did. I've often wondered if there was a Terrier with a softer coat than the bristle brush texture of a Scottie and now I know there is. A Wheaten might just be a candidate for me when the day comes for me to find a little one. But it's like I told the Rescue people, I don't care if they're worth 8 or 8 million (they're supposedly an $800-$1,000+ sort of dog), I'd love 'em up just the same.

BTW....a GREAT way to volunteer for a local shelter is to do the Petfinder updates for them...It can usually be done from one's own home & takes not alot of time. Shelter emails pics and descripts to you, you stick 'em on the web!

Thanks. All three are rescues.

Shelby is a purebred lhasa apso who was surrendered to the pound when her owners moved.

Annie was picked up by the Doggie Police at about 10 months of age and we figure, based on the shape she was in that she'd been out on her own since about 4 months of age. She's a shih tzu. Probably not purebred, but it's possible. We can't pinpoint other breed characteristics in her.

Hannah is an Australian Shepherd/German Shepherd mix who was surrendered to the pound because of what they called separation anxiety. From what we can tell, it's more boredom and inappropriate curiosity. And the fact that she's so large (75 lbs!) that she can reach whatever strikes her fancy.

Twiggyann, your dogs are so cute!!! I really Hannah, her colors are so pretty! My Lucy (shelter dog too) has a bad case of separation anxiety, but thats actually not the reason she was surrendered. The owner kept her locked up in a garage all the time. Poor thing. We've been crate training her, and she still has problems with "remaining calm" (not barking!) while we're gone. We try to wear her out before leaving too, but I don't think there is such a thing with Lucy. As my mom would say, "Where's her off button???".

Thanks! As for Lucy, try a Kong toy. Use peanut butter or some cheese whiz or the liver paste they sell at the pet store to anchor pieces of liver, steak, hotdogs, etc in there. Give it too her right before you leave. That will definitely keep her amused if she's food motivated.

Jivewhistle
04-06-2005, 08:35 PM
Oh, aren't Kongs great?! We buy the Kong liver snaps to go in her large Kong toy. We anchor that in there and put some peanut butter inside and around the top. We give that to her before we leave but only the peanut butter keeps her busy...and not for long. I'm going to try freezing it the night before though....maybe with some yogurt too.

I have no pic of this, but this post belongs nowhere else but here...

I have realized lately that Sophie has learned to ring the doorbell when she wants to come in from the backyard.

I have deadbolt locks on front & back gates...NO ONE is climbing my fences.

I let them out & go upstairs to do dishes or whatever, and the doorbell (back doorbell...has a different ring) starts ringing.

I go to the door, wondering WTF, and there's the three dogs, with Sophie in front, looking up at me with their "we're done now" faces. I cant believe that ONE instance of my coming to the door after her accidentally pushing that button has taught her that that's what it's for!

This has happened SEVERAL times in the last three weeks.

My neighbor saw it & asked me...."Kelly, is your dog RINGING THE DOORBELL?!?!"

Um......yesssss :shifty:

Oh, I'm in love with Amanda's Phoebe! What a face!

She is a character, almost died on us when she was a pup. Now she sleeps with my daughter, who is diabetic. Phoebe will let us know when daughters blood sugar is to low and won't leave her if its too high. Boxers are very good family dogs if trained well.

maniago....ur girls r lovely, too! just majestic looking dogs, to me...very beautiful. And I truly believe about your dog, Phoebe, and your daughter, Phoebe's baby...dog's r very smart & very intuitive....most people don't give them the credit they deserve!! (of course cats & birds r the same way, i have them, too...but am more of a dog person)
My miniature dachshund, Sally, is always with me....she goes out to play, etc...does dog stuff...but...I have health problems...and she knows full well when I'm having a bad day a literally will NOT leave my side...I practically have to kick her out to potty...lol...but she goes about and does her lady like  business & comes directly back in...when, on good days...she likes to spend time outdoors chasing dragonflies and what not!!.....so....u thank God for your Phoebe as she cares for your baby!!
And Kelly..... :roflhard: :roflhard: I TRULY believe that...dogs r verfy, very SMART, people will say stuff about 'dumb mutts' and what not....I think that they r the dumb mutts...lol!! When Lonnie (DH) is taking his a.m. shower & Sally thinks he's been in there too long, she gets her little dog bed, brings it down the hall & waits outside the bathroom for Lonnie... :roflhard: can u believe?! One nite not too long ago Lonnie called me (it was past Sally's bedtime...which in her life...means EVERYBODY'S bedtime) as he was working on the computer...I came down the hall & what do I see...my little doxie in her bed...that she had brought out of the bedroom & down the hall so she could sleep by her Lonnie Daddy!!
So...yeah...I KNOW your dogs r ringing the doorbell....next thing u know...they'll be ringing it & running & :roflhard: at u!!!! :roflhard: :roflhard:

Twiggy, cute pics. Hannah is such a pretty dog. She looks so soft and touchable!

Silver, great twins you have there. Funny pic!

Rebecca, Sally is adorable. She's got the face of a true sweetheart. You're cats look very sweet too. :)

KellyK, that is SO FUNNY, about your dog ringing the bell!!! :roflhard: What a riot! My last dog taught herself to open the sliding glass door to let herself out. She would also let the cat out when the cat requested it. Luckily she was a good dog that listened to us, so she stopped when we told her to, otherwise we'd have frozen our butts off in the winter, with all her opening (but not closing!) the door. Here is Solomon (with all the cute lil pet names that go with it). At 7.5, he is the baby, and is a Cocker Spaniel/German Shepard mix. He looks like an overgrown Cocker Spaniel, and weighs about 50 pounds. He is a peanut buter freak (it is his chocolate, and he gets offended if someone else is eating it when he isn't), even has his own jar. He knows how to shake with both paws, and can tell the difference...and is currently learning to play dead. Oh, by the way, he is a momma's boy, and became even more of one when his older brother, my cat, passed away in January.

KellyK, thanks for the sweet wishes. It was very hard, I lost him in Janyary, 22 days before his 15th birthday. He was a purebred Himilayan, chocolate points. I am including a pic of him as well. This was taken a few days before he died. He is laying on the small of my 17 year old son's back. His name was Sinny (Sinbad, but we never called him that).

Lisa, I know it's a very PERSONAL decision, but I can tell you in my own experience, when my Katie died, the only thing that got my through was having Maddie here...and when Maddie wouldn't play with me (despite my best crawling, "wuffing" and "play bowing") and wasnt getting any exercise, I brought Sophie home from a local shelter. It felt SO GOOD to get to know another furry little soul! Training a new puppy gave me something else to concentrate on, and, Ive found I now have an even DEEPER relationship with my animals, which I feel I OWE to Katie.

My advice to you is to just start looking at Petfinder.com. You CAN search by breed. Read the stories, look at the kitty-faces.

I cant imagine living in a fur-less house!

We have five dogs, two English shephards and three shelties. The two sable shelties, Sadie and Miranda, are 11 years old. I've had them since they were pups. We adopted Kaeliegh, the tri-sheltie, a year ago. We think she is about three. (Kaeliegh is not in the first picture.) The boys, Bailey and Tucker, are English shephards and they are 3 years old.

Lisa, your puppy photo is soooo cute. Sorry to hear about Sinny. :( I lost my dog in January; it's so hard to loose a beloved pet.

Hilde, my dog was named Burmy, but we called her "the BooBoo." I posted a couple of pics of her on page 7 (http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/forum/viewtopic.php?t=899&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=90).

Catnik, your Daisy is another Charlotte look-alike.

Suzie, your cats are so cute together!

Rorshach, I don't know if I could handle having my feet attacked in the darkness! Hope your cat's over that habit!

Stacy, your dogs are gorgeous.

 well, actually no, Amy, he's not, still like to pounce on feet in the darkness, and even worse, he's got a clean foot fetish. He like to wrap himself around mine and my wife's feet whenever we come out of the shower. what's worse, is that he's taught all the other cats to do the same thing if he's not up to it.

He's taught the other cat's to follow suit? Oh man! The cuddling part doesn't sound too bad; as long as they don't trip you! This all sounds like footage (no pun intended) that could be on that funny cat video Femmy linked to.

Could be, though I'm in the midst of writing about my black cat's antics in a book called "Tails of a Cat Nip Junkie" Basically a book told from my cat, Osiris', point of view.

Thanks ya'll for the sweet thoughts!! I agree, I would not like havinga fur-less house, but my Mander pup (Solomon) is a JOY!! I love him to pieces. He is my dog (meaning I am his chosen person) he sleeps next to me, where I am, he is, etc...

I love getting to see your beloved pets!! All of them are wonderful!! Please give lots of scratches and loving from me!!

As pet people, we have all had this...

A Dog's New Year Resolutions
1. I will not play tug-of-war with Daddy's underwear when he's on the can.

2. I will remember the garbage collector is NOT stealing our stuff.

3. I will not suddenly stand straight up when I'm lying under the coffee table.

4. I will not roll my toys behind the fridge.

5. I will shake the rainwater out of my fur BEFORE entering the house.

6. I will not eat the cat's food, before, or after, he eats it.

7. I will stop trying to find new places on the carpet when I am about to throw up.

8. I will not throw up in the car.

9. I will not roll on dead things.

10. I will stop considering the cat's litter box as a cookie jar.

11. I will not wake up Mommy by putting my cold, wet nose up her bottom end.

12 . I will not chew my human's toothbrush and not tell them.

13. I will not chew crayons or pens, especially not the red ones, or my people will think that I am hemorrhaging.

14. When in the car, I will not insist on having the window rolled down when it's raining outside.

15. I will not drop soggy tennis balls in the underwear of anyone who is sitting on the can.

16. We do not have a doorbell. Therefore, I will not bark each time I hear one on the television.

17. I will not steal my Mommy's underwear out of the laundry basket and then dance all over the back yard with them.

18. I will remember the sofa is not a face towel and neither are Mommy's & Daddy's laps.

19. I will remember my head does not belong in the refrigerator.

20. I will not bite the officer's hand when he reaches in for Mommy's driver's license and car registration.

Rules Cats Live By
BATHROOMS:
Always accompany humans to the bathroom. It is not necessary to do anything. Just sit and stare.

DOORS:
Do not allow any closed doors in any room. To get door open, stand on hind legs and hammer with forepaws.

Once door is opened, it is not necessary to use it. After you have ordered an "outside" door opened, stand halfway in and out and think about several things. This is particularly important during very cold weather, rain, snow, or mosquito season.

CHAIRS AND RUGS:
If you have to throw up, get to a chair quickly. If you cannot manage in time, get to an Oriental rug. If there is no Oriental rug, shag is good.

When throwing up on the carpet, make sure you back up so it is as long as a humans bare foot.

HAMPERING:
If one of your humans is engaged in some activity and the other is idle, stay with the busy one. This is called "helping," otherwise known as "hampering." Following are the rules for "hampering:"

1) When supervising cooking, sit just behind the left heel of the cook. You cannot be seen and thereby stand a better chance of being stepped on and then picked up and comforted.

2) For book readers, get in close under the chin, between eyes and book, unless you can lie across the book itself.

3) For paperwork, lie on the work in the most appropriate manner so as to obscure as much of the work as possible or at least. Pretend to doze, but every so often reach out and slap the pencil or pen.

4) When a human is holding the newspaper in front of him/her, be sure to jump on the back of the paper. Humans love to jump.

5) When human is working at computer, jump up on desk, walk across keyboard, bat at mouse pointer on screen and then lay in human's lap across arms, hampering typing in progress.

WALKING:
As often as possible, dart quickly and as close as possible in front of the
human, especially on stairs, when they have something in their arms, in the dark, and when they first get up in the morning. This will help their
coordination skills.

BEDTIME:
Always sleep on the human at night so he/she cannot move around.

LITTER BOX:
When using the litter box, be sure to kick as much litter out of the box as
possible. Humans love the feel of kitty litter between their toes.

HIDING:
Every now and then, hide in a place where the humans cannot find you. Do not come out for three to four hours under any circumstances.

This will cause the humans to panic (which they love) thinking that you have run away or are lost. Once you do come out, the humans will cover you with love and kisses and you will probably get a treat.

ONE LAST THOUGHT:
Whenever possible, get close to a human, especially their face, turn around, and present your butt to them.

Humans love this, so do it often. And don't forget guests!

kitkat, what a handsome boy!

Lisa, I those lists. They had me rolling. :roflhard:

The dog list reminds me of my dog Burmy's proudest moment:
(Knotty Alert)
When I was a college student, and living in a house with other students, one day I came home and one of my male housemates was on his way out. He didn't look me in the eye, which I thought was odd, he seemed somehow uncomfortable. I walked into the house to find that my dog had discovered a new favorite chew toy: my other housemate's...ahem....personal pleasuring device!

....:roflhard:

Not so new knitter but with such a new pet that it's not even at my house yet :D

I'll be moving into my very own little house sometime this summer and both my sister in laws are going to donate their cat to me since it can't live at their house anymore and this is one of them, Willem.
He now lives with my boyfriends sister but he's being terrorised by a young Jack Russell, and I do mean tormented at times. I can't understand why this cat doesn't dig a few nails in the dogs nose but alas, he has never done that so the dog now uses him as a ragdol whenever she can get her mouth on him. Poor kitty :(
So, as soon as I have a house, he can come live with me and live out the rest of his life unmunched upon and in relative peace.

There's not too much to see in this picture but then again, I've been warned that this might be all I get to see of him all day exept when it's time to eat :rofling:

We gave the cats a bath today. I post some pictures on my blog thread. (http://knittinghelp.com/knitting/forum/viewtopic.php?p=26389#26389) PLEASE look at them, they're so funny! You can ignore the boring lengthy saga before the pics. :-)

BinkyKat, i took this pic just because of YOUR picture! I've been creeping around the cats while they're sleeping trying to get a picture of one of them yawning, and I finally did today!

great pictures everyone, i'm glad i'm not the only one obsessed with my "practice children"...

and a song that my mom made up for her doggie Jasper, in the tune of the oscar meyer weiner song:

My doggie has a first name,
it's j-a-s-p-rrr
my doggie has a second name,
it's grr-rr-rr-rrrrr

and if you met my doggie,
you'd say he's mighty fine
cuz j-a-s-p-rrr-grr-rrr
is a good boy all the time.
(thank you)

my babies don't have songs, but do have a zillion names...my oldest is Emmie lou, aka barky barkerson; next in line is Frida-bean, aka chunky monkey; and last but certainly not least is Katie-bear aka wookie, aka problem child....

OOOO little miss bear is ADORABLE! I love white puppies!

And be glad that your wedding dress is getting some use! I'm sure the rest of us justahve it "preserved" in the box or shoved in the bag in the back of the closet. It's not like you're going to wear it again, anytime soon anyway... I should drag mine out to let the kitties sleep on! (mine is preserved with cake icing and beer, btw)
