I have the Boye set of circular needles and if i just use a stitch holder on the end of cables, can I use them as straight needles? There's a project or two that require straight needs in sizes I don't have and no $$$ to purchase them.

I don't see why not...I have some Clover 20" "flex" needles that are like that....they look like circular needles but only have the needle on one end, then the cable, then a bead at the end so the stitches don't fall off.
