My pattern says to (AFTER doing 4 rows dec 1 stitch at each end of every row--I just k2tog/p2tog doing st st) work 12 rows dec 1 st at each end of next and every foll alt row.

Now, does that mean I start dec on row 1 or 2? And then dec on row 3 or 4? My assumption is dec row 2 and every alt row, but you know what the say about assumptions! (makes an *** out of you and me?!)

I always decrease on Row 1 and then every alt row after that so 3, 5 etc.

I assume Row 1 is the 'next' row.
