I know I have concerns about buying wool. I really want to do a felting project so I have been researching wool A LOT. I found this thread from knittersreview. Full of great information from people (from what it seems... I don't post there so I don't "know" them) that seem to know what they are talking about. It is a pretty long thread... but worth the read if you have moral issues with wool. I think for the most part I have made peace with buying wool... though I do think I will still stay away from Australian wool for the time being. (any one know any "brands" to shy away from? ) Anywho... good reads

I took at look at the wool alternatives the Save The Sheep web site listed and then the list of "consumer problems" they say wool causes.

Some of the consumer problems associated with wool:
It is susceptible to mildew and moth damage.
It is not always machine-washable, and cannot be directly ironed.
It often damages easily and is not durable.
It tends to be expensive.
It causes allergies and/or extreme itching for many people.
It's very water-absorbent, and doesn't dry quickly.
It stains easily, but doesn't clean well.
It's prone to retaining foul odors.
It shrinks with every wash.

It makes me wonder how long they had to stay up that night to compile this list. "It often damages easily and is not durable?" Huh?

I wonder how many "consumer problems" we could come up with for the alternatives they listed such as: polyester fleece and synthetic shearling. I guess the people at Save the Sheep are more concerned with our little ovine friends than the environment as a whole.

I find this type of "cause" to simply be a bandwagon to jump onto for those who need that. In my opinion, there are plenty of legitimate causes in the world that need our attention and support, and this isn't one of them.

Oh, and as Paul Harvey would say, here's "the rest of the story:" Wool is Best (http://www.woolisbest.com/animal_welfare/mulesing/index.html)-- a rebuttal to PETA's attack on the sheep industry in Australia.

Happy wool shopping!!!

KP's WOTA is from Peru.....
Jaeger yarns are not Australian...
I kinda research individual yarns as I am considering a specific purchase.

Well, that's just weird now, isn't it? It will be interesting to hear the explanation.
