Amy, Lisa (Sogrammatical) Jeremy and I met up at Fitzwillie's restaurant in Northampton this afternoon. I was so glad to meet everyone--as nice in person as on here. ;) We didn't do too much knitting, lots of chatting, and then off to Webs. Jeremy had gone there first, but joined us afterwards, too. What a place! Just the main part of the store is bigger than any shop I've been in, and there's a warehouse with rows and rows of yarns, coned and bagged. At first I didn't think I'd leave with much because it was so overwhelming. WRONG!! I won't be spending any more money on yarn for a while, but I don't regret anything I bought, which has happened at yarn sales I've hit in the past. Here are some pics that I got.

I can't tell you how glad I am that I went. It took about two hours each way, and the only trouble I had was finding the restaurant. I would do it again in a heartbeat!!

Oh what fun, lucky for all of you! I may join in next time, I am only about 2 hours away myself.
Well... what are you using first from the treasure trove?? I would have a hard time deciding, maybe just pile it all around me and roll around until inspiration strikes. Knit on!

We're definitely going to do it again come spring/summer. Please come!!
I don't know what to use first. the large skeins of hand-dyed alpaca are beyond soft. I handed one to different family members, and the first reaction is Oooooooh in a higher pitched voice. I am determined to finish what I have on the needles first, though. Otherwise I'll make myself insane. Meanwhile, I have been rolling around in it! :rofling: <---that's me rolling and smiling!

We had so much fun!! I wish it could have been LONGER, it went so fast!

Okay, here are my pics below, and HERE is a video! (http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/images/forum-posts/noho/noho-dec05.AVI) of us being goofy and saying "hi to everyone!" (I'm afraid it's huge, fast to watch but big to download, 27 mb, I hope it works for everyone, it's not in my usual video format.)

We met at Fitzwilly's restaurant. Poor Ingrid said she got a bit lost trying to find the place, and then had the not-uncommon experience of being yelled at by a self-righteous Northampton pedestrian ("I didn't know it was a state law here to stop the car for pedestrians!"). But she arrived unscathed by the local wildlife , as did Lisa and Jeremy, and we had a wonderful lunch and knit session!
Ingrid took this one for me of the rest of us:

Here's Ingrid (dawning a GORGEOUS sweater she made--recognize the pattern on it from her old avatar?). Ingrid and I compared techniques for weaving in yarn in the back of knitting. *swoon* (Ingrid's my new soul mate.)
http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/images/forum-posts/noho/ingrid.jpg

That's all for my pictures. We had lots of fun drooling over yarn at Webs. Jeremy and Ingrid both purchased a great stash at Webs. Lisa and I, being spoiled locals who often shop at Webs, were more modest in our purchases, and mostly lived vicariously through Ingrid and Jeremy, enjoying all the goodies they got!! :inlove: That alpaca that Ingrid got was exquisite, we could hardly tear ourselves away from that rack, it was SOOOOO yummy.

Thanks Lisa and Ingrid and Jeremy, it was so awesome hanging out with you! :waving: We're planning on meeting up again in Spring or Summer. :D

WOW WOW WOW, you guys did it up right! What a nice thing to do for the holidays! I want to go to WEBSSSSSSSSSS ! Maybe we can do this next summer when it's warm and the drive won't be so daunting for me.

Hey Ingrid! Isn't that Cleckheaton yarn you got? It looks like it, the yarn I'm using to do my little blue socks. And yes, I bought my first alpaca yarn this year and it's to die for, sooooooo soft and luscious. I can't wait to get more.

Wonderful pix you guys, thanks!

Ingrid
12-31-2005, 04:01 PM
I didn't get Cleckheaton this time, but that's what I used on my Fassett sweater and I love the feel of it!

For the summer jaunt, if you are in the city and want to take the train to Poughkeepsie, I'll pick you up and we can go from there.

What a great time :D . My only regret is that we didn't have more time to hang out. I hope next time we will. I also hope with the better weather we'll get to see even more people. I was also glad to be able to thank Ingrid and Amy for all the help. It was great meeting everyone and they were even more fun in person than they are on line. I'm getting to the point where I'm going to have to start hiding my stash. I actually bought FOUR 2.2 lb cones of Shetland wool (13.99/lb) and 500 yds of bamboo yarn that was marked 40% off the usual $22 per skein price.

I didn't know that store was in Northhampton! Dang - I have relatives up in that part of the state, and they never TOLD me! (I live in eastern MA, btw).

Looks like you all had a stellar time!

Aside to Ingrid: I must knit that sweater. I may not be capable of it today, or tomorrow (I can do the color switches, just not the necklines yet), but I must have a sweater like that in my collection - maybe I can be ready for something like this in time for the winter project in Hildy's KAL. Where did the pattern come from, and what yarn do you recommend?

Your outing reminds me of another nirvana of fiber a bit further north, in Bath, Maine. Halcyon Yarn is the place. If you ever find yourself on holiday on the coast of Maine, take the trip - it's only an hour or so north of Portland. Halcyon doesn't even begin to cover the joy and luxury contained in the yarns they carry. (They have a website (http://www.halcyonyarns.com/), too.) I tend to be better behaved shopping online than when I'm actually in the store. I think it's because I can't actually touch the yarn. That is what usually kills me.

You mean the sweater I'm wearing? It's a pattern from the book Sweaters from Camp. I used the yarn that was used for all the sweaters in the book--someday I'd like to make them all. I'm up to two. It's Jamieson & Smith 2-ply jumper weight--very thin, kinda rough--but the COLORS are to die for. www.schoolhousepress.com has the book and the yarn. It's knit in the round up to the neck (using steeks) and then after the steeks are cut, you knit the sleeves right onto the body. No seaming at all! :D

I have to agree about the yarn in person thing. I never in a million years would have ordered the hand dyed stuff on line. Too expensive. But feeling it made me HAVE to have it. I bought two there and then was so taken with it, I ordered a third just to make sure I'd have enough for a sweater.

Oooh- you are making me so jealous! But if I am lucky I will be able to get to that store before too long. (yes, becuase I definitely need more yarn, lol). I pass by Bath, Maine from time to time, too, so I will have to try Halcyon, too! Thanks! (But Shhh- don't tell my husband!)

Aside to Ingrid: I must knit that sweater.

Just to warn you, Ingrid's sweater is knit in a VERY fine gauge. What is it Ingrid, like 8 sts/inch? That's something like 80 stitches per square inch. That's a lot of knitting, and of course it's all in intricate color pattern!

I don't think I could do that sweater. Not that I wouldn't enjoy it, it's just that I would die of heart failure if it got a stain on it.

It WAS gorgeous though, a real masterpiece, absolutely STUNNING Ingrid. :inlove:

Ingrid
01-03-2006, 10:36 AM
 Thanks! Yes, it's about 7-8 st per inch. I think I calculated close to 100,000 stitches. It's obviously a doable sweater--no special tricks are involved. Just willingness to put a lot of stitches into one project.

You centers of population density are just not fair. I WISH I had an entrepenuerial bone in my body - and tons of dough - 'cause if I did I'd start a GIGANTIC lys here in BFE middle-of-nowhere Kansas (don't get me wrong - I love where I live) - This knitting thing just keeps getting more and more expensive - I foresee many many flights to parts yet undiscovered just to buy yarn. The DH doesn't know what he's in for.

So where exactly is this nirvana of yarn - Webs???

oh yeah - western KS - I know there are great shops in the eastern end of the state - Wildflower in Manhattan, Yarn Barn in Lawrence and Knitwit and The Studio in KC - I hear there's a really good shop in Omaha - Yes?

Nonetheless, it takes a real commitment to venture out. I'm in Hays and we have a small but dedicated quilting shop that stocks more and more knitting supplies every day - but it's frustrating - ya know? So much to knit - so little time. :(

there are a couple of great ones in omaha and the one that is my favorite (actually NOT the one that most people know about) is EXPANDING!!! The one everybody knows about is stocked to the gills (though a little less so as they are having a clearance sale and i am doing everything i can to relieve them of their supply of malabrigo!) but is crowded and dark.

My favorite one is bright and sunny with funky furniture and decorations. sorted by color instead of brand (which i like a lot!) and is just generally delightful. AND THEY ARE GETTING BIGGER!!! :cheering: :happydance:

yeah that's what i need
