I'm working socks with a Sherman heel and I've gotten half way then I hit the enchoachments. It says : P enc (purl encroachment): sl 1 st purlwise; lift st beneath next stitch purlwise; insert L needle into both st from L, behind R needle;
P 2 tog.
K enc (knit encroachment): sl 1 st knitwise; lift st beneath next stitch purlwise; insert L needle into both st from L, in front of R needle;
K2 tog.

I can't figure out where to lift the stitches from and with which needle and what needle I put it on. Sorry if I sound a bit dense, but I can't figure it out.
Thanks! Here's a link http://www.knitlist.com/2002/ToeUpSock.htm

I have no idea!

Have you tried writing Mary?
Or, go here, read the bottom paragraph and plead for help - she does say to write her: http://hipknitism.com/classes/basic_ribbed_socks/lesson4.shtml

My guess: K enc: sl 1 st from L to R, using the R needle lift the next st on the L needle from the back - now you have 2 slipped, unworked sts on the R needle - knit these thru the back (?).

P enc: sl 1 st from L to R, using the R needle lift the next st on the L needle from the back - again you have 2 slipped sts - purl both.

I'd have to try this, but it sounds doable.

This site explains it very nicely with pictures.
They won' let me post the link, so I'll try giving it to as text & not an address link.

You slip one st purlwise and then look at the next st on the L needle. You want to pick up the st below that st using the R needle. Purl or knit the slipped st and the picked up st (which are both sitting on the R needle) together.
