View Full Version : My first sweater!

The pic is a bit out of focus, but this is a top-down raglan made of Oxford yarn (Italy) in a pattern from the KnittingFool.com free calculator.

I just finished it and blocked it, it is drying as I write :)

What I learned - knitting top-down means doing one whole sleeve at a time. It was extremely hard for me to make sure the second sleeve was exactly like the first, even though I did use a row counter. Anyway one sleeve was narrower. I tried it on before blocking and it was not noticeable, even felt OK. But in blocking I stretched it to be the same width, so hope it will be fine.

So my next sweater will be knit in pieces and I want to knit the sleeves at the same time to increase the chances that I can knit them identically!

Also learned that I like sweaters to be loose, and this one I knit in *comfortable* fit, which to me is pretty snug. I was trying to approximate a sweater I own that I bought at Old Navy, so I made it shorter than the pattern called for. The fact that it is tighter though causes it to ride up and be effectively shorter than the Old Navy one. Still I stretched it down an inch or 2 when blocking so we will see!

This took me 3 months to knit on size 6 needles. All my projects before this have been on needles size 8 or bigger. I did a couple of other small projects before completing the sweater and it seems I now knit faster!

That looks wonderful! I love the colors! Great job! Most sweaters relax when blocked, so you might be in for a nice surprise when you try it on again.

That is a really lovely sweater! Congrats!

I can't believe you knit that whole thing on size 6. Such small needles... that takes a lot of patience! I like the colors a lot too!
