HI everyone,
I want to make an afghan for my brother & his wife, who are in their early 30's... It's going to be a house-warming gift, and their style is very modern - lots of IKEA stuff...
Anyway, I have been searching hi & lo for a more "modern" looking afghan/throw pattern and every book I pick up has old "granny" looking ones... you know what I mean?
Also, I am a poor college student :crying: and don't have tons of money to spend on it - so I'm also wondering what type of yarn to use that won't put me in (further) debt!!!!!
Thanks for reading!

www.knittingpatterncentral.com has lots of free patterns, but I don't know if any would qualify as modern.

 Well, I like the Lion Brand Homespun. There are a TON of different colors and the skeins are pretty nice sized and not too expensive. You can always go with a solid color with a simple pattern in the knitting itself.

Hope that makes sense! Good luck!

I faced the same dilemma when I wanted to make an afghan as a wedding present for a couple of newlywed hipsters (one with an MFA, no less)

The one I made was this, and it used Lion Homespun which is reasonably priced...

I believe you could easily convert it into a knit pattern using a loopy stitch on big needles, too.

The end result was lovely and lush and soft and it was a big hit!

OOooooOOOoo I like this one.

Ya know I was at a bookstore today and saw two books called 7 day afgahn and Heirloom afghan by the same authors and they had some funky patterns and it made me think of you!!!!!
