Why are heel flaps on socks knit with the sl1, k1 pattern? why not just knit across?

My theory is that it makes the heel sturdier, so it will last longer.

That's what I thought at first, but that's not even the part you stand on! eep.

But it IS the part that rubs against the back of your shoe all day.

the sl1 k1 pattern is actually called the Heel Stitch - it makes a wonderful sturdy fabric for the heel... you can also continue that sl1 k1 pattern when you turn the heel and also continue it on the sole of the sock...

Huh. i did notice that the fabric seemed sturdier, but it didn't make sense to me about the why. I may continue the stitch on the sole of my sock, now that you mention it. I finished my first sock over the weekend but am starting a new pair of socks instead of knitting a second sock for several reasons. My new pair is in chenille, so I'm sure the extra reinforcement is a good thing.

That is a good idea to continue the pattern on the bottom of the heel. I may try that on my next pair!

The pattern I bought to make my DH some WW socks had me continue the sl1, k1 pattern on the bottom of the heel too.
