It;s probably YMMV, but is there a common armhole measurement for a men's sweater? My pattern says to knit 9.5" after the armhole bindoff and I'm at 8" now, and it seems rather large already....

The best way to check a measurement is to measure a piece of clothing. Find something that fits and see what it measures. I've knit sweaters for myself where the armhole is 7 1/2 - 8 inches, so 9 doesn't seem unreasonable.
