View Full Version : Socks for swollen feet?

I need to make socks for a friend who recently has had some very serious heart issues. His feet are swollen so he has a very difficult time finding socks that fit him. He wants them to be loose around the ankles.

Any suggestions on how to do this? Do I just add a ton of co stitches and then decrease to the normal stitches when I get to the heel?

Maybe a very large size with really stretchy yarn?

I found this pattern (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/patterns/socksnotskinny.htm) entitled 'not for skinny legs'....it may be helpful :D

Oh! Thank you for that pattern link. That is very helpful! :D

Ingrid - what kind of yarn would you use? I think stretchy yarn sounds like a really good idea considering his feet are bigger at night, etc.

I looked at elann.com and searched for stretch and came up with this. Schachenmayr (http://secure.elann.com/productdisp.asp?NAME=Schachenmayr+Only+Stretch&Cat=&ProductType=5&Count=11)

I'm sure there are other stretch yarns out there.

I was also thinking that if you made a tube sock, it might be easier to get on and off.

Oh that looks perfect. And I see your point about the tube socks being easier to get on and off.

Maybe some slippers would be good? They aren't as high as socks but I think they'd be loose on the ankles. I found these off the top of my head.

I originally suggested slippers but he wants socks to go under the slippers for warmth. I like that pattern though! My aunt had me searching all over middle tennessee for slippers just like that for Christmas! Looks like she will get some handmade ones soon.

My list just keeps growing and growing.
