Due in January and I'd like to make a skull cap or small hat to put on the baby right after he/she is born. Also, we aren't finding out the gender ahead of time, so I'm going to make one in pink and one in blue.

Does anyone have a pattern or link to a pattern for a hat that will actually fit a newborn's head. I have the caps that my other two children wore after they were born and they are mighty tiny, albeit stretchy. I'd kind of like one done in a stockinette stitch where the brim kind of rolls up, kwim? Or really any cute, warm, snuggly, newborny kind of thing. :D

Also, can anyone recommend a good yarn for this? Price is no object, even if it is really pricey, what yarn would you use for a newborn hat if money were no object??? Don't hold back, give me the scoop!

Help me out peeps! The due date is January 8th, so I've got a little over 6 months to get these done. Not a big deal to most of you, but I seem to be a really slow knitter with not much extra time for knitting.

Thanks ever so much!!!

I absolutely, heartily, enthusiastically recommend Debbie Bliss Cashmerino for baby hats. And for all other baby items, for that matter. :D (Rowan Classic Cashsoft yarns have the same fiber content if your LYS doesn't carry Debbie Bliss, like mine.)

One thing that's great about it (other than having cashmere in it and still being machine washable :inlove: ) is that it comes in a bunch of different weights. So if you find a hat pattern you like, chances are, there is a Cashmerino yarn that you can use. :D

And here is a pattern generator for a basic roll-brim hat:

Congrats ! :cheering: on your new bundle of joy. You know since you are like I was ( dont want to know what it is as long as my baby is healthy) you could always do a cap in a nuetral color. A color that could go for a boy or girl or you could always do one in stripes using pink, white and blue or what ever colors you like. You can also go here to find all kinds of free patterns. Last time I checked they had alot of patterns for babies.

This hat is easy and precious, and it has cute hearts! I made one when I was a beginning knitter, and it was very easy.

And here is a pattern you can purchase for making "fruit" caps. It's designed by Ann Norling, and has gotten good reviews online.
