DH has been learning to knit along with me, and in typical male fashion, refusing to do it the "traditional" way. So while I struggle to finish a scarf, he is just "playing" ... trying things out, regardless of whether they are listed as beginner, intermediate, etc. In just 3 weeks he as already learned cables, dpns ... far surpassing me, who has just finished her first garter stitch scarf.

But I digress. He finally wants to make something. Out of Quiviut, of course -- though he's willing to practice with a cheaper yarn. This is what he wants to make:

The site the photo came from (http://www.ancientcw.ca/Custom%20Wear/Muskox%20Wool%20Hats.html) offers it already made for $500.

It doesn't have to be an exact match, but something similar, that would work with that tiny wool.

Any suggestions??

Thanks!
Ann

$500????? :thud: I think theres a few alternative out there that are much cheaper. (altho I hear quiviut is THE softest thing on the planet)

Yeah, DH figures if he can knit a $500 hat for $100, he's ahead of the game ... it's something he'd actually wear, too. I'm afraid, though, that he may not settle for any other pattern, but I'd like to try and find something close that works up with that tiny yarn.

I'll make him one for $450! :teehee:

There are earflap patterns out there. Basically you make the flaps on a dpn each, then cast on for the front of the hat, knit the stitches of the flap, co for the back of the hat, knit the other flap and knit a basic hat from there on up. You can check www.knittingpatterncentral.com , or check out this (http://www.mielkesfarm.com/bsic_hat.htm) site for the top part of the hat.

I'd mix it with something else...that hat of Quiiviut would be so hot one couldn't wear it very long....even if one was in the Arctic.

http://www.sweetstitch.com/projects/countryhatpattern.html This should do it. I'd be careful about making it entirely of Quiviut, tho. It'll be so warm it won't be comfortable to wear. Even just dog fluff spun and knitted needs to be mixed with something "cooler" like wool, and as I understand it, Quiviut is even "warmer" than dog fluff.
