I made this hat (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter03/PATTcoronet.html) for my sister for her birthday. It's a bit tight on me, since my head is way bigger than hers, but you get the idea. I guess it came out alright, except for that small part of the band that sticks up where my stitching was less than even. Figures I'd capture that part with the camera (D'oh!)

Is the top of the hat supposed to have that sort of "peak" to it?

I think it will do that, simply because the stiches are gatherd up, but I'm not sure ^_^;;

That's really pretty, I'm sure your sister will love it!

:cheering: First project? I'm impressed! Love the cable work. You have a very lucky sister. (And I think the peaks are just from the decrease method.) Very nice!!!!

Well, first knitted object isn't totally honest or accurate. It's the first object that I've actually COMPLETED. I've done plenty of stuff that I've either torn apart or threw out, etc for practice.

Thanks for the comments! Does anyone know of a decrease method that doesn't make that funky bump up top?

Have you thought about maybe making a pom pom and sticking it on top to hide the bump?? That would work

That looks great! Is that Lamb's Pride Worsted?

That it is. It's some fun stuff, but it's pretty fuzzy (is that because of the mohair?), and I was sneezing a lot. hahahaha

Thanks for the kind words everyone, and I'll check out that link Moonangel. Though I don't believe a pompom is quite my sister's style, thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Great first FO!

What I do for the "bump" is to take one of my tiny crochet hooks and gently tug from the inside of the offending stitches, which would be on the inside of the hat. I usually do every other stitch, then depending on how it looks I will continue to do the rest. Sometimes just tugging on a part of each stitch. I never read this anywhere its just what I do.

Remember you are your worst critic. Enjoy your progress.

By the way the bump doesnt look so bad from here. :)

I vote pom pom. I have an agreement with people I knit hats for, that I don't knit them without poms. But, ymmv. However, I don't think the peak is that bad.

That hat is *fabulous*, and I reallly think you're being too hard on yourself. I wouldn't have notice any sort of "bump" on top if you hadn't said something. I *love* Lamb's Pride, btw. One of my favorite yarns to knit with. You'll have to report back on how your sister liked the hat!! Nice work!
