I like to knit with Encore (http://www.yarndex.com/yarn.cfm?yarn_id=333) for afghans.

I would use something washable since it is a throw. Alpaca is soft - but doesn't wash easily. I would look for an inexpensive cotton or acrylic mix. Bernat makes a wonderful 100% cotton baby yarn (but only in white and baby colors.)

Unless you live at the North Pole and have $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to spend, I would strongly recommend against the alpaca! Sure, it would be softer than...a really soft thing...but it'll cause global warming!!!
