I teach sunday school for three little 4-year old girls and the church is always so cold so I want to whip up some simple cape/shawl/wraps that I can bring for them. I've spent the last 2 hours looking for patterns for kids their age (since I'm terrible at trying to alter a pattern) and I just can't find something that's simple and quick. What would be really great is just a triangle or I remember my grandma made me a shawl long ago that was 3 small squares, so like a blanket missing a quarter. How difficult would it be to alter an adult pattern?

If you just want a triangle, there's a very easy pattern that you stop when you think it's the right size.

Cast on 3 stitches. Then k1, yo, knit across. Do this on every row, and it will grow bigger and bigger. Stop when it's as wide at the top as you'd like it to be. You can do it with any size yarn and needles, too.
