Okay, so I got a ball of Sirdar Snuggly DK for a baby hat and the guage on the yarn says that 4x4 is 22 st 28rw on 4mm needles.

When i knit a swatch I got 28 st to 4 inches.... on 4mm needles, and my stitches weren't that tight at all.

okay so I got to thinking that 'DK' means 'double knit' and that I should hold 2 strands together.. so I did another swatch.. I got 24 st in 4 inches on 4mm needles. much closer to the guage listed...

so what is the deal anyways? am I supposed to use two strands?

DK is short for double knitting, but it's a weight of yarn, not necessarily meant to knit double stranded. 22st per 4 inches is a standard gauge for dk, but I can't imagine why your gauge would be so different. :??

Are you sure it's 4mm needles and not size 4 needles?

yes, I just double/tripple checked. I have size 4mm or US 6 needles and the yarn calls for 4mm/US 6 with a guage of 22 st in 4 inches.

I can easily knit my stitches so I know that I am not too tight.

crap. oh well, I am thinking of actually getting another ball and using 2 strands anyways as that swatch knit up really thick and soft. then I'll be at 24 st and for a hat the pattern will be really close.
