I am thinking about making this (http://www.spunmag.com/article/051229neckcowl) cowl for my MIL for Christmas. I'm thinking something that is more machine washable would be a good idea though. Does anyone have any suggestions? The pattern said alpaca is best for the drapeability so I was thrown for a loop!

Suri Merino ( 5 sts to 1" on a size 7) might work. You'd have to play with needle size to get the gauge but it's a lovely and less expensive yarn.

Hope this helps!

If you are looking for machine washable, try the DK wt of Debbie Bliss Merino... I dont think its DRYABLE, but definitely machine washable!

I just used Rowan Cashsoft DK (http://www.ryclassic.com/Cashsoft_DK_500.htm) for a hat and it was a DREAM to work with. I think it would be perfect for a cowl. It is so soft and drapey, AND machine washable. Not machine dryable but at least you wouldn't have to hand wash.

Sorry -- I spaced on the "machine washable" part -- it is Monday after all!

I'm a total alpaca nut, so you're on your own there. ^_^ To me, it's worth handwashing. Hope the cashsoft is what you're looking for!

I'm all about handwashing personally! I just don't know if the MIL could be bothered with it! I'm really thinking about making one for myself with the baby alpaca once all the other christmas presents are completed!

Karabella makes a bulky machine-washable brushed alpaca. Not what you're looking for, but it's conceivable that other machine washable alpaca yarns exist. If you look hard enough, you may be able to find one that'll work with the pattern.
