Have any of you knit the backyard leaves scarf. I'm going to make it for my son's preschool teachers. I heard a lot of complaints about the center seam, and wonder whether anyone did a provisional cast on, and then used the kitchener stitch for the seam. If you did, did it work out?

The center seam comes at the end of the scarf, not at the cast on. The reason for it is that the ends have a cool pointy-leaf edge. I started it and didn't like the yarn I was using, but was planning on doing a three-needle bind off between the two sides. There would be a seam, but it would be at the back of the neck.

Wouldn't kitchener (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.knitty.com/issuesummer04/images/TT_kitchener_7.JPG&imgrefurl=http://www.knitty.com/issuesummer04/FEATtheresasum04.html&h=225&w=300&sz=46&hl=en&start=17&tbnid=FnpUD0ZRrSuqDM:&tbnh=87&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dkitchener%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr %3D%26client%3Dfirefox%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:unofficial%26sa%3DG) work for connecting the two halves regardless of whether you're doing it from the cast on or bind off edges (technically, they wouldn't be bind off edges since they're not bound off, but you know what I mean)?

I've knit and love Backyard Leaves scarf, as a matter of fact, I'm planning on knitting another.
As Ingrid said, your cast on will give you the cool leaf shaped ends. I kitchenered mine together and you can hardly see it
