The pattern I am using says to have 5 inches of hat before I start to decrease. This is meant to be a warm winter cap so I want it to for sure come down and cover my ears and ear lobes. What length do you find is the best to get your ears covered?

I usually do six to seven if I want to make sure it goes over my ears but I have a slightly larger head.

5 inches for a childs hat, 7-8 for an adults hat.

Depends on the hat, needles and yarn for me.

with a bulky weight yarn and 5.5mm needles and a regular stockingette stitch, I go 5-5.5 inches and then decrease and that covers my ears.

on a ribbed hat with the same weight/needles size I go 5.5-6 inches because the decrease happens faster.

on a smaller guage yarn with the same needles I would go a little longer still as the decrease rounds #'s are the same, but they take less length.

hope that makes sense!
