View Full Version : I think I can ... I DID IT!!!! (OT)

My Ph.D. thesis defense is tomorrow. I am feeling mostly prepared, but rather stressed and nervous (as is to be expected, I suppose).

What has me most concerned is the weather! :grrr: They are forecasting a :!!!: 1-3 inches of snow overnight! Now I know that seems like a pittance to many of you, but to those of us in Seattle it is a big deal. We only get snow once or twice a year, so no one knows how to drive in it and a small amount can paralyze the city. Luckily my talk is not until afternoon, so I am hoping that if we do get snow or ice it will have cleared enough by then that my committee can make it in. Please send good thoughts and voodoo fingers my way!

Good luck tomorrow.

I'm sure if you get any snow it will melt before afternoon.

Oh wow, I see Seattle is covered in ice today and tons of schools are shut down. Will you still be doing your thesis defense?

Thanks for the good wishes! My degree will be in Molecular and Cellular Biology, with a research emphasis on Biochemistry and Structural Biology.

Conditions here are a bit dicy, but not show-stoppers. I was able to make it in just fine, and have not heard from anyone on my committee that they will not be able to make it. The sun is shining, so hopefully conditions will continue to improve throughout the day.

Off to practice one last time...

Hey jhelanee, you're in the same field as I am! (although I am as of yet only a VERY lowly research technician)

One thing my PI always tells grad students who are defending - YOU are the expert in your project. You'll do great! Knock their socks off!

(what is your project, by the way?)

I PASSED MY DEFENSE!! :cheering: :happydance: :happydance: :cheering:

I'm not quite finished yet (still have to finish up the last bit of the written dissertation and get it turned in), but am over the last major hurdle! Now I am so tired that I am ready to :thud: - off to bed!

That is great. I am so happy for you. I have two sisters, one had to defend a capstone or something the other, and the other had to defend her masters thesis. They both passed and I am so proud of all three of you.

Hard work pays off. JOB WELL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!! :cheering: :cheering:

I hope you slept like a baby!

Now sit back and relax, get out your knitting and a cup of tea or hot chocolate and enjoy the snow! I hear more is on the way in your area tonight.

It was sub-zero here last night. I'm going to join my daughter on her futon and we will watch a DVD of an old TV series and spend this cold day knitting!

Cool, I did my BS in Biochemistry and took lots of Cell Bio and Molecular Genetics as my electives....I'm applying to med school this coming summer.
