View Full Version : Need SIMPLE ladies' top pattern--I mean REAL simple!

I want to try my hand at knitting a simple top--a short-sleeved, a tank, or maybe even a beginner long-sleeved sweater. But it has to be easy because I have no experience in shaping armholes and putting garments together. I also want one that doesn't involve $50-$100 of yarn that I can't afford. Worsted would be nice so I can experiment, get the screwups over with, then I'll spend more $ on yarn. It needs to be simple enough so I can learn basic shaping without getting scared off! :oo: Thanks.

You could try the Tivoli/Picovoli at magknits.com. Or find an explanation and the link at glampyreknits.com. Very easy, top down, short cap sleeves. It's fitted with waist shaping decreases. There have been hundreds of them made, I bet (google for pictures) and many make it out of a cotton/wool blend or any worsted weight yarn. Your choice.

Take a look at some of the patterns here (http://www.knittingpureandsimple.com/). I don't know if you can order these from the site, but if you could check with your LYS to see if they have any. These are mostly knit top down with very minimal shaping!

Also, I did the Chickami (http://www.chicknits.com/catalog/chickami.html) tank not too long ago. It's real simple and fun! You can download that pattern from that linked website.

Have fun! :muah:

The first top I ever made was the one listed here: http://www.knittingpureandsimple.com/page2.html the basic shell #997. It knits up relatively quickly and can be done with a nice, but inexpensive worsted weight cotton. The armholes were simple and it can be done on rounded needles so you don't have to worry about a seam. I wish there were a similar pattern in a V neck....

if anyone knows of one...

I know DIYNetwork.com has some lovely, easy free sweaters from Knitty Gritty.

I saw Sally make this sweater, and it seemed relatively easy.

This is the first top I knitted after about a 30 year break, I didn't use the pattern stich, just stockinette. It uses a DK weight, but you don't have to use expensive stuff. Scroll way down for the Katia Florida Summer Top.
