Can you make a suggestion on how to join my new color of yarn? I was thinking the duplicate stitch, but do I want to keep joining a new color of yarn? That will leave a lot to weave in, right?

if you are knitting with wool you could try the felted join.

I considered that but it has alpaca in it too. I wasn't sure if it would join good. Thoughts?
