View Full Version : varigated yarn and cables

Hi, I saw some pretty varigated yarn I might like to buy, and am also wanting to try a new cable pattern (I just finished an irish hiking scarf and love it), but wondered, would a varigated yarn look pretty with cables? Would the cables be harder to see because of the variations in the colors, etc? Anybody ever tried this? Insights would be helpful, because I'm fairly new to knitting and yarns.
Thanks so much! Mariblue

I'm spitting I just posted this! It got lost.
Again: I feel that colour variations hide stitch patterns, including cables. You should Google to look at variegated cables, etc., and see whether you feel the same way or not.
If the colour changes are done so that you get a few inches of one colour, then a few inches of another, the pattern will be less obscured. I think Noro Kureyon changes in this way, Google it for some pictures if you're not sure what I mean. Wools with many colours mixed together and tiny repeats are more likely to lose the pattern. It may be helpful to look for a knitted example to show you how the colours change - at the shop, or online. Remember that if the swatch is wide, the colour repeats will appear to be shorter than what you'd get in a scarf.
If the 'variegation' is in fact only tiny flecks of different colours it may
not hide the cable, some people like the 'tweedy' effect this gives.
And if you like the wool, and intend to continue knitting, maybe you ought to buy it anyway - I'm sure you'll find a pattern for which it's perfect!

P.S.: Here's an example of a wool that doesn't obscure the pattern too much (although that may be just good photography)

I think if your yarn is dark, the cables are less obvious. I've done cables with Karaoke and Malabrigo and they look beautiful. Here are some pics:

I LOVE the Karaoke cables. I love all the cables actually but specially the Karaoke - it looks like it has been dip dyed =D

Thanks for your repiles everybody. I am just loving knitting cables, it's so fun and easy!
Ingrid, for some reason I can't see the pics you posted. I'm on dial-up though (ugh), although the page says that it's done loading...that happens a lot on this forum, but I bet they look really great.
Thanks for the link to that shawl, Sarah, it really does look nice. Yes, the yarn I was looking at had pretty short variations, so I think I'll use it for something else. I can see that with longer variations in the colors, though, that cables could look quite lovely. :teehee: And at some future point, I'd really like to see what malabrigo is all about...
p.s. Ingrid, the pictures loaded this time, I can see them, and they are awesome! So pretty.
