Many people see a difference in them, but I don't - at least in my own work. Sometimes I use one, sometimes the other, just whatever comes to mind at the time.

it would seem like the ssk would be bulkier b/c you knit the two sliped stitches tog. xxx

It isn't really bulkier, because it's essentially the same thing as slipping one, then slipping it over the next stitch. Try them out and see what you think.
