I can't seem to find the perfect knitting bag. Have you? If so, please share.

If not, share what your bag is lacking, I need these hints because I may just have to design my own!

I just purchased this one and for me, it's the perfect everyday knitting bag. I have one scarf, socks, 3 patterns, 1 afghan block and assorted needles and supplies. I bring it to work with me every day and I love it!

So many nice bags out there...How to choose? Problem of abundance :teehee:

I Haven't found the perfect one yet.. I need one to hold a lot but still looks nice.. but I don't want it to big... I asked dh for one of these for my b-day and got "blah" he didn't like them.. . I can't decide between the keylime and mandarin but I have till April to decide...

I'm glad to hear it holds the above... I think I will really like it.. can you keep your keys and wallet in it too or do you have a separate handbag??

It also comes with a zippered bag inside that is the same material as the outside. AND it is long enough for straights if you need to carry them. Yep, I have a pair of glasses, keys, wallet and every supply you can think of, including cable needles, etc.

I love the lime green but was afraid it would get too dirty being as I throw my bags around and don't want to worry about them.

I Have it and it has a lot of room and is wonderful for organizing your items.. I used to carry it to classes and still use it for trips home cause I can cram a lot into it... but I found it to big and bulky to use on everyday trips...

ETA: I have the orange knitting tote bag.. should have quoted you on that sorry

Ohhh boy...what a subject! :teehee:

I have recently purchased several (4) bags from www.greenmountainknittingbags.com (Martha Saaco). I have a Med-lrg Carpet Bag (my favorite of the 4), a med-size SnowPond bag (my 2nd favorite) , A Fat Tall Baguette, and an Oversized Carpet Bag. I like Martha's bags because of the way they perform. You can 'cuff' them by letting the two sides lay down...and you then have easy access to the contents. Ya just have to see them to understand! Martha posts new bags every Thursday afternoon at about 5 pm ET. She also takes custom orders...but custom orders are more expensive for the same style bag.

I also purchased a Morgan bag from www.catruncreations.com and it is my 3rd favorite. It's construction is more defined than Martha's bags at greenmountainknittingbags...but, I still love it. She has a lot of pockets inside! She is taking custom orders straight from her website.

Both ladies are excellent seamstresses and businesswomen. They take care of business!

The reason that the med size bags are my favorites...you don't have to have a lot of yarn to fill them up....and most of my projects need to hold just 7-8 skeins of yarn. The taller, larger bags can hold 3 projects at a time easily!

Well, I decided to share my other two greenmountainknittingbags with you as well. I like to see things people are talkin' about...and maybe others might, too!

Below are the two oversized bags that I spoke of in my first post.

All in all, I love these new bags because: in addition to being functional, they are beautiful, too! I am at that time in my life, with all 5 kids grown, married and out of the house...that I can get a few great things for me!

I have the herrschners bag. I like it because of how much it allows you to carry. You can work right out of the side pockets with taking your yarn out. the inside is large enough for multiple wips and inside pockets for just about everything. Also has elastic thingys to holds needs. I like to carry this to classes or knitting gatherings but as mentioned earlier it is a little large for everyday or for the bag to be used of the always on hand, never leave home without my knitting. I am looking for a small stylish bag that can be carried in conjunction with my purse and not have me looking like a bag lady.

This is the one I have
http://www.ebags.com/baggallini/expandable_tote_microfiber/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=5788

I bought it years ago to take on a trip with me and when I started knitting I dumped my things in there. My improvement was the sliding zipper Zip Lock bags, freezer weight, and I haven't found any "knitting" bags I like any better or even as much.

I got mine at Hobby Lobby - not even sure of the name brand, but it did say knitting bag on it - it is AWESOME! It has a zippered front where I can hold scissors and all my little tools, tape measure - everything - Then it has little side pockets that can hold all kinds of little goodies and needles - plus it has an open pocket on the front that's perfect to hold patterns, and then the inside is roomy, has a space to place 2 pairs of straight needles and came with a yarn holder that you could use - I choose not to - but its fantastic! And with the 40% off coupon that Hobby Lobby has all the time - I think I got it for under $20.00 - It's tan and looks a lot like a computer bag or purse - I LOVE IT!

I have a bag that my sister in law made me for Christmas. It's very big, and it has several little pockets on the outside, and more on the inside. She also made me a needle roll to match. It's very cute. It's a mauve colored burlap on the outside, with green, ivory and mauve striped cotton pockets on the outside, and the inside is lined in an ivory garden print (pockets inside to match). It's very me.

The only thing I don't love about it is that all of the pockets are "open" pockets"...meaning there is no closures on them. So my little stuff flies out every time I throw the bag down (which I do. Alot). If I could change anything, I would add snaps to all of the pockets.

You would have to look to be sure but I think that HL has their knitting bags on sale for 50% off this week. Check their website. I know for sure they have the coupon for 40% but it was either this week or last that they have the bags on sale.

one (http://www.joanns.com/catalog.jhtml;$sessionid$TXUHGZYAAAY5KP4SY5NBIHR50 LD3OEPO?CATID=82324&PRODID=139331) and it comes in handy too.. you can fit a lot of yarn in it.. has your side pockets for water, celle phone, and head sets... the front pocket holds tons of needles and is how I store and keep my DPNs... the pocket on the flap is very roomy and where I keep my gauge thing.. and the way it closes you can fit your keys on it and keep up with them... I use this for classes too... just depends on what you are looking for.. I don't think its an everyday bag or not for me cause it is a bit bigger than I like.. but its not as bulky as the orange one... :teehee:

I love the KnitOne bag for everyday but for trips and weekends I just turned one of my Kipling Bags (messenger) into a knitting bag and it works great! So many places for do-dads.

I want a GreenMountain bag but I've yet to be able to get one already made and the web-site says the waiting list is up to ten months! I'm too much the immediate gratification type :pout:

I agree with what someone said, Hildie maybe, about it having a more sturdy bottom. That would be my only complaint.

It's a bit expensive, but they're all a little different--all the lining on the messenger bags is different. I paid $60 from Kemp's store, Diva Knitting (http://www.divaknitting.com). I also use it everyday, so I'll get my money's worth.

i haven't found the perfect one yet. I always seem to be carrying a million things with me, so I need a bag that I don't have to hold in my hand. That is, one with a long enough strap to put over my shoulder. Also, it shouldn't look too much like a functional knitting bag. It should look like a cute purse. Also, it should have at least a few pouches where I can put money and credit cards so I don't have to carry another purse for those things. Actually, lots of pockets on the inside and a couple out would be perfect. But I haven't found this bag yet. :(

I had a picture in my mind for a long time of what my bag looked like, just a simple straw bag that would stand up on its own. And after looking all over I found it at Target a while ago on sale for maybe $12. I currently have in it 5 skeins of yarn, 6 or 7 sets of needles, 2 current projects, The Knitting Answer Book, eyeglass case and a few other little things. I love this bag, it holds everything I want and if I take it somewhere I just throw in my wallet and keys and I am off.

I am pretty new here, but here is the one that I use. The woman who taught me how to knit made it for me. It has these nice big pockets on the outside to hold a pattern book or copies, and the inside has quite a few pockets for notions and needles, and then very roomy, I usually carry at least 2 projects in it. There is a red Top Down for Toddlers sweater in there, and I started a Clapotis the other day, so that is in there too:

Hey, I am a trucker, I have my reputation to uphold :rofl:I can see it being appropriate for a guy. My only reservations for it, and it may not hold true for you is that A) It's bulky, I prefer a lighter bag, but that's me. B) I worry about not being able to get balls of yarn (rather than skeins) in those outer pockets. But I still love the bag! FYI, it has eyelet holes to the inside of the bag so that you can thread your yarn through there and when you're done, but your project inside without any yarn hanging out.

Those pockets are cool, I need to find a good reason to buy that bag, even if it's not my primary knitting bag. I'm CRAZY for pockets, on ANYTHING!

As promised, here are pictures of my Namaste Everyday bag.

For reference, the black blob inside on the right is my KP Options.

Inside, on the left there are 3 elastic pockets, on the right are 3 straight (non-elastic) pockets. And there's a flimsy divider in the middle that zips up that you can keep random things in.

Oh yeah. There are 2 sock books and some 8 1/2" x 11" sheets of paper in the outside pocket.

I toss my keys, wallet, glasses, (sometimes a hefty paperback) in the pocket that has a clasp.

Hey Mason--check out that orange tote before you buy it...I hated it! It just seemed bulky and it had TOO many pockets. I don't want to feel like I HAVE to organize everything...and the pockets that were there weren't the sizes I wanted them to be. Don't get me wrong...I've heard several people who say they have it and like it. What about a plan 'ol canvas tote or something? My mom uses a plastic shopping bag like you'd get from a department store (not a grocery sack)--that isn't very "girly". Maybe you could knit yourself something cool!! It'd be a good way to learn fair isle or something so you could knit a truck on the bag or something! LOL! Seriously--just check out the bag before you buy--make sure you like it!

I use "tote" by Vera Bradley b/c it's big enough to hold a project and all of my essentials but I do like the looks of some of these bags you guys are posting...especially the namaste bag!!! You guys may have shown me my birthday present...

Although I like the Namaste, I have to carry a lot of stuff in my backback for school, so to carry my projects around I just use small tote bags.

Bought 5 of 'em during a sale at Hobby Lobby. They're all black and will fit about two skeins and a set of needles. They're very very handy.

You could go to the local craft store and see what kind of canvas bags they have. Some have extra pockets on the sides and zippered tops.

If anyone's interested in the orange ones that I posted on pg. 1 (Herrshner's), I found a couple on eBay:

#1 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=130076350741&rd=1&rd=1#ebayphotohosting) & # 2 (http://cgi.ebay.com/Eagle-Good-to-Go-Knitters-Tote-NEW-in-package_W0QQitemZ290080677095QQihZ019QQcategoryZ83 927QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphoto hosting)

These are the exact same ones I saw at Hobby Lobby and online. I'm hoping some of you will buy them to keep ME from doing it. :)

Here's a pic of it.
The bag's holding, two binders, one pencil case and my laptop (in it's own sleeve). In the outside pockets I have the laptop power cord and lotsa itsy bitty stuff.

I actually use a black nylon zipper bag that my DH got for me from a work event. Its got his work logo on it...and the inside has some smaller pockets...so far I have 3 balls of yarn, 2 scarves in progress, 2 knitting books, a crossstich book, my needlecase, a paperback, and various smaller things like scissors, ruler, etc...

But I am on the hunt for a neato bag that screams MEEEEEEEE!

It isn't really a tote but I have the Lantern Moon Twisted Seagrass Tote/Basket--size medium and I absolutely love it. For all you cat lovers and Knitters:

My cats were getting into this dinky bag I had used when I first started, so; to keep them out of harms way and to keep them from having my husband up and down trying to take the yarn way from one and the needles from the other two- I bought a Sak hand bag. It is a crochet bag, it is light weight, has inner pockets, and is a purse.
I will post the link for something similar if interested. The zipper now keeps my babies at bay and my projects safe!

Ok so Thursday is my b-day.. and I've already got a start on b-day money.. I know I wanna buy a lace blocker with part of it but I would really like to get a bag with the rest..

I still like the knitone bags (http://www.knitone.com/knitting-and-crochet-bags/bags.php)

yet then I ran across this one (http://www.lanternmoon.com/GT.asp) a while back.. does anyone have it :teehee: I can't seem to find a review on it..

then I found Della Q bags (http://www.dellaq.com/) but can't find any good inside photos..

You wouldn't think it would be so tough to find a knitting bag...

Problem is I want a bag big enough to handle my wallet and keys.. also a project.. but I don't want a tote to carry... I buy totes then never carry them cause I feel they are to big...

If anyone has the lantern moon bag or a della q any info I'd love to read..

TIA

I had every intention of buying a Lexie Barnes Lady B at Stitches, but I got a Flo (http://www.dreamweaveryarns.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=24_180&products_id=957) instead. the Lady B just seemed too big once I really looked at it.
I  it!!!
small enough to not be overwhelming, but roomy enough for small project, notions bag, wallet, makeup, keys, cel, female paraphernalia, granola bars, etc. the straps are also long enough so I can put them on my shoulder and tuck the bag under my arm.
it doesn't zip shut, but it stays shut pretty tightly thanks to strong magnets.

My knitting bag got so heavy and I hated to have to tote 2 heavy bags (my purse also) out the door and everywhere I went. Right now I'm using my LL Bean Healthy Back Bag (http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?page=healthy-back-bag&categoryId=30118&storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&parentCategory=4520&cat4=2913&shop_method=pp&feat=4520-tn) which is big enough to allow me to stick one of my projects in 2 G. zip lock bags (http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/forum/viewtopic.php?p=368242&highlight=tog+bag#368242).

I LOOOOOOOOVE that LL Bean bag. Plus, it has TONS, I MEAN TONS of pockets. If you love pockets like I do, this is the bag for you:

Okay... this is the same bag, but with patches added. This is the gray one. All colors have black trim I think, except black which has gray trim. The top flap has a couple pockets, which I will probably use for keys, cell and $. When you lift the flap which is held down by velcro there are pockets and slots galore.

Looks great! I really need something like that so I can carry lots of knitting and have a separate LARGE pocket for things like wallet, keys, etc.

I don't think I have any A.C. Moores around me though. Wish I could find it on their web site (http://www.acmoore.com)! What's it called?

:muah:Thanks! That's sooooooooo sweet of you! Please post those pics later. I might ask you to get me a black one. I like the patches.....gives one ideas eh?!? If you can give approximate measurements, that would be a great help too!

I checked A.C. Moore store locator and unfortunately they don't even have stores in my State! Shipping shouldn't be TOO much, it looks like sturdy but heavy-weight material.

I'm looking for pics now. If anyone wants me to pick one up for them I will at cost + shipping. Colors are pink, red, black, gray, and yellow. I absolutely love mine.

I just use whatever I have around that my project fits into. I have a few bags left from when we purchased sheets that came in drawstring bags- they're great for organizing projects within my knitting bag :)

I knit just about everywhere I go. When I'm out in public I stash my current project in a ziploc bag and toss it into my already overflowing purse. Works great!
On the other hand, there is a knitting bag at Michael's I've been eyeing for awhile. It looks like a messenger bag and comes in some really yummy colors. :inlove: I don't know what brand it is though.

Well here is my knitting bag. I got a pink one, a black one and a yellow one. I am using the yellow one for pics as it offered the best contrast for the camera.

It is 16" across the front, 12" from top to bottom, and 4" thick at the side. As you can see it is quite large enough to accomodate the average sized kitty cat. The flap on the lid has 1 large zippered pouch that runs the width of the flap and is 9" deep. There is also a large velcro pouch on the right side of the flap that is about the size to accolodate a 16 oz soda bottle. There is one more zippered pouch that is about half the size of the flap and one pocket that is not secured by any means.

When the flap is open, the front of the bag has several pouches/pockets in 3 columns. Running across the top of all 3 columns is a zippered pouch. The left column has 4 credit card sized pockets and one deeper pocket. The middle column has 3 vertical slots meant for pens (crochet hooks) There is also a wider slot for a ruler or needle gauge. Under that is an unsecured pocket where I keep my Altoids tin of stitch markers and beneath that a zippered pocket that is coin purse sized. The 3rd Column has 2 unsecured pockets.

The fabric is canvas as far as I can tell. The strap seems pretty secure and is adjustable.

I doubt it will be the most durable bag ever, hence the reason it is priced at $5 (and I bought 3). But considering I will be stuffing it with yarn instead of books I think it will wear quite well.

Has anyone made the Constant Companion - it's a knit and felted bag.
I made it in brown and red! Turned out great., but no dividers inside for organization. I still have to carry a purse, and I'd rather not.
I got the pattern from

It is bigger than I thought! 16" L x 10" H x 8" W
The inside is divided in two by a zipper pocket. Each side also has pockets of different sizes for sticking stuff in. I think I could fit a sweater and maybe socks in there at the same time in addition to my wallet, cell phone etc. But I have 2 kids so I needed a big bag that could carry around all of our stuff plus knitting. Its already very heavy!

I use my husbands Crown Royal bags, once the goddies are gone, he tosses the bottle and I take the bag. Perfect size for my yarn cake, tape measure, stitch markers, and needles. Its always funny to go to the doc. office (or to get blood drawn, like yesterday) and see people's faces when you carry that bag in and then pull knitting out of it. They're like :noway:

Okay so today I was out shopping and came across this bag (http://www.kandcompany.com/products/product_pop.jsp?id=65141). Do i need another bag? of course not because i just got this one (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y200/brendajos/0906072220.jpg)in the mail from ebay. i love this one and at this point plan in continuing to use it but seriously it has no pockets....lol. So anyway i took very bad videos of me gushing over the bag. I have a new smart phone so i am not sure on all the settings yet... hence the reason for two videos. lol... anyway... they should give you some idea of how great this bag is! :) Okay i just tried to test the video and not sure if it is just slow because of my connection or if it is just too big (but i don't think so since they are a minute total) anyway if they take some time they will download i promise...lol. if i have time i may redo the video now that i have adjusted the setting on the length of video. :)

Okay i made a new video and i think this one is better... no weird break off in the middle at least...lol

Your puppies are so cute with the yarn!

At our house its the cats and lego. Let me tell you, I'd rather be stepping on your yarn in the middle of the night!

Better get them some Red Heart to play with! I just wind the skein around a crochet hook and pull the end yarn into the ball. I did this a few times when I had unexpected toddlers over and needed a toy!

After reading all of the posts I could find on the "perfect knitting bag", I was more confused than ever. I decided I really liked the Namaste Everyday bag (thanks to the wonderful person who posted the pics of the inside - very helpful!). But I couldn't find it in stock anywhere. Meanwhile, I happened to be browing around at Target Friday night when I found a beautiful red tote that really reminds me a ton of the Namaste bag for just $24.99

I've tried about a dozen times to figure out how to insert a link, and it's not working. But you can find it on Target's website. It's called "Merona Tote Bag, Red" and the catalog # is 10584627.

Very roomy. and lots of pockets - perfect for carrying a couple of projects around. I am SO thrilled!

I've tried a number of bags over the years including store bought knitting baskets and have to say my favorite to date is hubby's retired softsided laptop briefcase. It has several large compartments (great for holding pattern books and current projects.) It also has numerous pockets and pouches inside and out, many with zippers (to hold needles, tape measures, stitch holders and all the accessories essential to knitting or crocheting.) Zip it all closed and take it on the road with you. I have yet to find anything that holds as much and keeps it all organized.
For my entire collection of needles, hooks, embroidery hoops, etc., My hubby gave me one of his machinist tool boxes. It has felt lined drawers of various depths and widths as well as the top that opens to hold yarn.

I have a Namaste Newport Bag in Olive(pictured here (http://knitpurlgurl.blogspot.com/2008/11/yummy-yarnie-goodness.html) in my blog post). It is a gorgeous bag and I love the way it feels - but the sides are so soft and slouchy that things tend to fall out if I don't have it fastened. It really only has 2 compartments and a center zipper compartment that divides the 2 compartments. The middle zipper pouch is very slouchy and doesn't do a good job of keeping the 2 sides separate. It's really only a one project bag. I put my project in one side and the yarn(s) for it in the other side.

The upside: I carry my wallet in it because it's a terrific looking bag and I find I don't need a separate purse when I go knitting with the group. And non-knitters would have no idea it's not a purse if I had to pop by the store on the way home from the yarn shop.

I have just printed off the "Knitting Needle Knitting Bag" from KnittingDaily.com. I am going to make it a bit deeper, and add 2 pockets into the lining so small scissors, cable needles, stitch markers can be snug and safe. It should be fine for carting a project to work etc.

I found this bag yesterday at Tuesday Morning. It's discontinued & I bought it for $4.99!!!:cheering:
Actually I bought 4 of them - 3 for gifts if I can bear to part with them.
It's really great. There are 4 easy access outside compartments, 2 med. storage compartments, 1 lg storage compartment, & 4 elastic top interior storage compartments in a bag that's 13 1/2" wide x 16" high x 4" deep. It's a lot roomier than it looks in the pic. Mine are black 7 they have a nice slip thru closing on top to hold it all together. Check out your local Tuesday Morning store to see what they've got.

It's pretty big! and takes up a good amount of space in my livingroom so I use it as an end table.I'm working on a nice doily to put on top of it.I put all my balls of yarn on the bottom and it has a giant tray that lifts off at the top where I keep scissors, my needle roll, tapestry needles and my current project.Since I usually have a lot going on at once,I select the most immediate project for the tray.

I have a very tiny bag, but if I'm working on, say a pair of gloves, I just fold my dpns down, wrap the yarn around multiple times(to make sure the needles don't fall out) and just shove it in my purse. It's only like 5x9", so if I need something larger,I simply use this duc tape messenger bag I made.I like the bare essentials though :3 I don't like bags with compartments and stuff.

I'm busy working on my own version of one type of perfect knitting bag myself (http://anotherlongyarn.zinalee.net/?p=1203)...although when it's a small project, yeah, I just have it in a GoKnits Project bag in my regular purse.

I'm having a lot of fun with it, maybe I'll make up a few different bags so I have a whole wardrobe of bags...the perfect knitting bag always changes with the project!

Iv bought two bags from walmart that were meant for scrap booking. They are the perfect size and have pockets all around the sides of it. I just sewed on some snap buttons on the ends to close it when not in use. Only 5 bucks on clearence along with all this other scrapbooking stuff. Iv also seen some gardening bags similar to mine at the the dollar store.

I made this (http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Arielluria/lacy-v-shopping-bag) bag, not intending for it to be a knitting bag, but it's so perfect for that, because it can hold soooo much, that I keep toting my stuff from room to room in it. Here's a pic, I stuffed what I had nearby in it and there's room for more! I hated my color choice, but I hate to frog more :noway: so I kept it and started another immediately.

Inside are: an XL manís sweater, 2 large skeins of Red Heart and a scarf project almost finished (150g of yarn), and thereís room for much more!

:yay:
found a free Ravelry pattern called " Barn Bag" and i not quite doubled the number of stitches/rows etc. and its not too big or too small. Just make the base any size you want and go on from there. Just need to refigure the math a little. Its soft & lightweight.

Is this it on Ravelry?: Barn Bag (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/barn-bag)

I started a Market Bag group on Ravelry and the thing I'm noticing is they are so expandable they make GREAT knitting bags. If you keep everything in ziplocks like me the lacey bags are perfect!

We're getting ready to do a KA/CA of market bags, so join us (no need to join group) if you want. Ravelry Market Bag Group (http://www.ravelry.com/groups/market-bags). The new Provence Summer String (Crochet) Bag (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/provence-summer-string-bag) pattern is winning in the votes for crochet bag. This one below slightly modified with a long strap:

Short answer: One that has knitting in it.

Long answer: I used to carry this huge quilted bag and now i carry just a little one big enough for what im working on and thats it. Things used to get lost in my big one and i would get frustrated. So now i just throw my knitting in this little bag and what tools i think i might need and off i go.
I still carry the big one when i have a big project. But mostly, its the little one now.

I got a resusable shopping bag at Michaels that is really cute that I have been using as a knitting bag. The bottom is stiff so it stands up. the only thing is that when it does fall over everything comes out.
