Here's what the directions would say if I wrote them out row by row (if
you are making the larger size). If you are making the smaller size, your
stitch counts would be 2 less on each.

On the row before you start these decreases, you have 36 stitches.

Row 1: K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1--34 sts.
Row 2: Purl (no decreases).
Row 3 K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1--32sts.
Row 4 Purl (no decreases)

Row 5 K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1--31sts
Row 6 Purl (no decreases)
Row 7 K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1--30sts
Row 8 Purl (no decreases)
Row 9 K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1--29sts
Row 10 Purl (no decreases)
Row 11 K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1--28sts
Row 12 Purl (no decreases)
Row 13 K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1--27sts
Row 14 Purl (no decreases)
Row 15 K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1--26sts
Row 16 Purl (no decreases)
Row 17 K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1--25sts
Row 18 Purl (no decreases)
Row 19 K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1--24sts
Row 20 Purl (no decreases)
Row 21 K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1--23sts

PLEASE tell me I really do understand now....
Before I was counting EACH row, and when I got to 14 rows including the purl row, I stopped. THat is why I STILL had too many stitches. I am PRAYING that I got this... please SOMEONE comfirm! LOL
BTW, this is what it looks like when I stopped...why is one side more decreased than the other?

You have to do row 1&2 EXACTLY as the pattern calls for, for rows 5 -31 you are just repeating rows 1&2 over and over again till you get to row 31 You have to decrease on both ends of odd numbered rows even numbered rows you purl
Just keep repeating rows 1&2
ROW 1---K1,ssk,Kto last 3 sts, k2tog k1
ROW2---Purl
SSK & K2 TOG are your deceases

You have rows 5-31 for the armhole shaping for the sleeves but you're on the back. Please read the pattern again. For the back armhole shaping, you simply repeat rows 1 and 2 until you're down to the number of stitches you need. And they decrease 2 sts on every row 1.

ETA: I originally thought the picture was correct, now I see that since you only decreased on the end of the row, that's why one side is more decreased than the other. I repeat - look at the armhole shaping for the BACK only!!!! Cover up the rest of the pattern with a sticky, it's confusing you!!
