Well, it's a PITIFUL first attempt but I did it. I'll have a post with more into at my blog tomorrow. In the meantime, behold my yarn barf :P

:cheering: :cheering: Congrats!

My first yarn looked very similar to that. Don't worry - you'll get better soon enough!

Don't think of it as yarn barf, how about novelty yarn or cat toys?

:roflhard: novelty yarn! I'm really not sure that mess qualifies for yarn at all :P THanks for putting a positive spin on it though.

Anyway, here I am at spinning day 2 and I am beginning to get something that actually does look like yarn. I figured out my biggest problem is that I wasn't pre-drafting at all and my roving is pretty thick so that was making things very difficult! Also, it's wool top and not slippery at all. I wanted to get something inexpensive to practice on but I could have chose a better "beginner" fiber.

I spun about 4 lbs of rather ugly fibre in my early days, as punishment for buying this stuff because it was cheap. I learned quite a lot from it though. It is really hard to spend big bucks on fibre when you are starting to spin.

It sounds like you would like something more "slippery". I could be misreading you, but I find that slippery is not good in the early days, you want something with a bit of grip. Slippery can just fly through your fingers in clumps.

Yes...I was thinking less slippery would be a little easier, but maybe not. I don't know if I'm getting better or jsut getting more use to what I am using but it's drafting just fine now that I am using thinner pieces to start with.

I think I'd be happy to spin that yarn my second day. Today is going to be my first day. Unless I wait until tomorrow. I don't want to mess up this beautiful alpaca roving! So soft and from friendly alpacas near me. samm

You'll probably do much better with that nice fiber. As soon as I stopped using that icky stuff, my spinning got automatically better.

I'm so glad to hear that! I'm still trying to get up the courage to give it a go. So silly. I haven't had a stretch of time today to sit and work on it. I did read a lot about it today, though, and think I've got the idea. samm
