Hi everyone! I haven't checked in here in a long time, because I've been busy with the Oddball Blanket stuff, among other things.

I've been doing a lot of spinning for the past week, so I wanted to share some photos.

I finally finished spinning all the blue merino wool roving I won on eBay. Some of it was a bit overspun, but I was MOSTLY satisfied with it.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/123/421195768_b0601b6c58.jpg

When it was all spun, I wound it on my skein winder, then got it wet, then hung it to set the spin on my doorknob, using my lazy kate as a weight.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/128/422116844_2909c60897.jpg

After it dried, I twisted it into a pretty skein, and was VERY satisfied with the final result.

Today, I was so happy with my blue merino success, so I was motivated to spin some more. So, I pulled out some more roving I got on eBay. Some "confetti" wool. (I've got LOTS of that roving!)
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/170/423552997_adec9f8206.jpg

After just an hour of spinning, I had a spool full of a pretty pastel single-ply.

Pretty! Are you going to ply the confetti, or leave it as a single?

Lovely blue merino!
Is that confetti wool from Coppermoose? I've heard good things about it. :)

I'm planning on plying two spools together tomorrow to see how it looks plied. I'll let you know....watch for more photos!

Kate! :teehee: A lazy kate is used to hold your spools of yarn when you ply them together to make a thicker yarn.

Lovely blue merino!

Very Good, Silver!!! http://bestsmileys.com/signs5/4.gif
It IS from Copper Moose Productions!

I really like the confetti wool. It's very easy to spin. My only problem is that the little flecks of color sometimes don't stick with the wool very well. Maybe if I was a better spinner, it would be easier for me to let it "flow" more.

One more thing about the blue merino.....

When Marvin (my hubby) came home from work today, I said, "Look at THIS!" and I showed him the yarn. He thought I had BOUGHT it at the yarn store!
:happydance: :cheering:

And here is another photo of the confetti wool I'm spinning.

I have two pounds of that roving.
(32 ounces should be enough for a sweater, shouldn't it?) :teehee:

Kemp, you would LOVE spinning this stuff. Copper Moose has another pound (16 ounces, of course) of confetti wool (http://cgi.ebay.com/Confetti-Wool-with-Multicolor-Silk-1-lb_W0QQitemZ230096342874QQcategoryZ36601QQrdZ1QQss PageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem) available on eBay right now!

They also have some smaller lots (http://crafts.search.ebay.com/_Roving-Wool-Fiber_W0QQcatrefZC12QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ3QQsacatZ36601Q QsassZcoppermQQsbrsrtZd) available for lower prices. I REALLY like that seller. They are so good to work with.

Coppermoose is one of my very favorite suppliers! Probably 40% of my stash is from Coppermoose alone!

He does sell a lot on Ebay, but you can order anytime from the website... www.coppermoose.com I LOVE LOVE LOVE his Blue Faced Leicester and that's also where I got the cashmere I showed in another thread.

How did it go? If I didn't already have plans I would have attempted to show up. Charlotte isn't that far from SC.

Wow! I can't believe I didn't put an update in here!

The spinning demo went VERY well. I didn't sell anything, but that's okay. I figure that I'll sell some things as time goes by. I did accomplish one thing, though. I spun enough of the confetti wool to fill two bobbins. So, I plied them together to make a beautiful skein of two-ply yarn!

Here it is, together with the blue merino I spun earlier. I'm a happy spinner! :)

I just finished spinning some purple merino I've had in my stash for a while. I got it on eBay, but can't remember who I bought it from.

It's SUPER SOFT, but not a color I would ever use. So, I'm giving it to a forum member that loves purple. Andrea!

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/195/482329823_f5598cdb9d.jpg

Here is how it looked while it was on the wheel. I used a flash for this photo, so the color doesn't look right. It's actually a true "grape" purple.

I wound all the purple merino onto my PVC Niddy Noddy, wet it, and am leaving it to dry overnight on the niddy noddy. Good thing I don't have to worry about warping the niddy noddy, since it's made from PVC pipes.

Thank you, Kemp and Leah!

Tonight I tried spinning a different fiber in my stash. I had a one ounce sample of some beautiful "autumn" colored merino-silk blend.

I had bought some other fiber from this ebay seller (Split Rock Ranch), and she sent this sample as a bonus.

It was SO FUN to spin!!! Beautiful, soft, and flowed easily through my fingers. I didn't want it to end!
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/170/483423541_1bc043eb89.jpg

And here is the final product of the purple merino I spun last night. So nice! It made a VERY LARGE skein too! That four ounces went far. :)

I'm pretty sure that merino/silk sample (http://www.divaknitting.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=150&products_id=718) you have is the same one I have been spinning. Love it!

Swap the Red with Purple and its just like the one I have been spinning as well... Oh I love this stuff... Its going to be sooooooooooo hard to put it down when I'm done spinning it and try a different fiber. It was very pricey, but worth every cent...lol It will take me a while to spinn it all I bought 1/2 pound...lol

Kemp, it looks an awful lot like mine!
I got mine from Split Rock Ranch on eBay.

It felt GLORIOUS in my hands.

Leah, if I had 8 ounces of this stuff, I would keep spinning it until it was gone....ALL IN ONE SITTING! :teehee:

Last night, I started spinning some silver alpaca top I've had in my stash for a long time. It makes such a beautiful, soft yarn! I can't wait to ply some and make a nice hat for my hubby! :)

I wish I could I'm dieing to knit with it. Unfortunatly I only have a drop spindle and I can't spin for long perieds of time.

Stunning... just stunning... I love that gray color and it looks sooooooooooo soft even in the picture, just stunning!

It all looks so :muah: Somewhere amidst all of our moving boxes is my roving. I want to spin!!!

Shandeh

I took a break from spinning yesterday, because my left arm was starting to ache from all my pre-drafting. :teehee:

So, I've been knitting instead. I'll probably finish the silver alpaca tonight. I want to ply it!

Don't you just hate fiber realted injuries? My pinky on my left hand went to sleep last night on me when I was finishing up some socks!

Shandeh
05-07-2007, 11:15 PM
Yes! They are such a PAIN....LITERALLY! :teehee:

Tonight, I was able to finish spinning all the silver grey alpaca. It took longer than I expected. 8 ounces of alpaca takes longer than 8 ounces of wool for some reason. I guess because it's a little harder to spin.

When I was finished, I had 2 full bobbins of yarn, so I plied them together. The finished yarn is SO BEAUTIFUL! I'm so proud. :)
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/197/489210960_f3900505d4.jpg

I had a tiny bit of alpaca left on one spool when I finished plying, so I looked in my craft room, and found a bobbin of confetti wool I had worked on some time ago. I put it on the lazy kate with the alpaca, and plied them together to make a nice yarn too!
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/207/489210958_d40088a3b3_m.jpg

I cannot believe how soft that alpaca yarn is. Unbelievable.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/225/489210974_075deb7e1f.jpg
I can't keep my hands off it!

I plan on making a hat and scarf set for myself. Anyone know of a good pattern for chunky yarn?

Shandeh
